Can you eat Honey on BFFM?

Can you eat honey on the BFFM plan? Does anyone know? My #2 meal calls for oatmeal and I can NOT eat it plain. I usually eat the pre-flavored instant oatmeat (cinnamon roll MMMMM!!). I'm also eating an orange and 1/4 cup (1egg) of egg beaters.

Thanks,
Kimbra

Hi Kimbra,

Honey is a natural high glycemic food which similar to sugar spikes the insulin level in your blood stream. You can read more in depth what this does to your metabolism. Bottom line is that in addition to it's high caloric content, honey is probably not considered a BFFM "A" list food.

Personally I avoid all sugar, honey included.

On the same lines, most of your supermarket instant oatmeals contain sugar in them. When eating oatmeal look for the unprocessed, "steel cut" or 100% whole oats. This often means boiling for several minutes but ou can pre-prepare a multi-serving amount. To add taste to your oatmeal there are many ways to be creative. I add splenda and sugar free maple syrup. Other forum members will also have suggestions.

BFFM really means avoiding all flour, sugar and processed foods. It's a big change if you've never given them up before but you will feel amazing and have energy gains.

If you're looking for a sweetener that is low glycemic, stevia or agave nectar (tastes similar to honey) would fit the bill.

What is sugar free maple syrup? Real maple syrup (which has natural sugar in)?

Can you have berries or other fruits? Adding some fruit and some cinammon could help the taste of the oatmeal for you.

I eat 1 tsp. of honey daily with my steel cut oats. I thought honey was on the "ok" list but in moderation? I could be wrong. I find it does nothing to hinder my progress so I will keep eating it.

I think you could try it for a week and see what happens. What I'm getting out of the BFFM is that each person's body is individual in how it reacts to foods. You may be able to eat the honey and still loose fat, but I think most people need to avoid the blood sugar spike. I eat mine with fruit and that helps a lot with sweetening the taste. :)

Good luck!

You may be able to eat

You can also avoid a blood sugar spike by combining sugars with protein and/or fiber. The oatmeal has the fiber in it. Adding a protein source would keep blood sugar from spiking (as it would if you ate honey by itself).

Thanks guys. I just cut up my orange and put in it. Not too bad. I did have 1/4 cup egg beaters as my protein. I avoid all sugar substitutes because I get bad headaches if I consume them. I might try the unsweetened applesauce. This is my first day on the plan so I'm sure I'll be trying different things.

Hi Kathryn,

Sugar free maple syrup is basically maple flavored splendarized juice. No sugar, just a lot of Splenda.
