Hi, Boxer! Thanks for your kind words!

Alas, I'm not a trainer (I'm certified in Group Fitness Instruction through ACE, which is quite different in some ways from personal training), so I'm not sure I can offer but the most generalized opinions.

That being said, if a client is sedentary AND that much overweight, the first step is to get a complete physical so that she can be cleared for exercise. Heart condition, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and ruling out diabetes should be primary in this evaluation. Also rule out any orthopedic problems involving the joints and back.

Then, if the client is cleared by a physician for exercise, yes a walking and light weights program would be a good place to start. A specific schedule should be determined by a professional trainer skilled in working with sedentary, overfat individuals who wish to lose storage fat and get fit. If the client enjoys the water environment, then certainly traditional water aerobics classes would be good to try out too, as much for the fun factor as the workout benefit factor.

Initial assessments need to be taken and reassessed as the client continues through the training process.

Safety is indeed of paramount concern. First step: primary care physician for a complete physical. Next step: trainer.
