Bought the Blades!

Just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my rollerblade question. I purchased a pair of K2 Athena's at the Sports Authority today. Of course, when I got home, I thought I totally got ripped off because only one skate had a brake! Duh. Now I just have to learn how to use that brake!

Good for you!:+ :7 It is so well worth the investment. You will have so much fun!:) The most important thing is to learn how to stop! So be careful. Learn to bring the right foot up to use the brake. I love mine, have had them since the 80's. Have fun, and be safe!:p

Hi Gina! Wow, I miss seeing you here! What a nice surprise! My daughter & I have rollerblades and used to have so much fun in my old neighborhood. I need to dig them out again. It is so hard to learn how to stop....that was our biggest problem. My daughter took a bad spill one day trying to stop in grass and hit her chin/jaw. Luckily, she was okay but it was scary sooo be safe and wear all your safety gear! Wrist breaks are the most common injury with rollerblading. Boy, am I being a Mom or what!?!? Have FUN!

Are they the kind with the brake in the back? If so the easiest way I have found to stop is to kind of squat with the leg with no brake and dig the heel in of the foot with the brake while your foot is a little out in front. Get good at it before you try skating down even a slight hill. I wish I knew how to do the hockey stops like the kids do, but I'm afraid I'll kill myself. Have fun with them. I love mine.

Speaking of wrist breaks, It is a good idea to wear wrist guards. I wear my all time in case I have to bale.

Hey Gina! Good to see you back on the boards.

I second the recommendation for wrist guards. When I first got my rollerblades (long time ago), I seemed to fall a lot on my hands trying catch myself. The wrist guards worked great.
