Bookclubbers: The Kite Runner

It looks like The Kite Runner is going to win, I may be wrong, but it has a strong lead.

On the other poll, the vote was to choose now and discuss in September. Is this still the consensus?

Can we agree that The Kite Runner is the winner, or should we wait a little bit longer?

Thanks,
Lori

Lori, the Kite Runner is fine with me. I'll pick it up this week. I think the reason that we picked September to review was because of people on vacations?? We could discuss it and those that cannot read now could wait til the next selection??? Just an idea. I am game for whatever works for everyone.

Yes it's fine for me for September, if people are going on vacation. Or we could read something else, discuss, then read The Kiterunner, and discuss in Sept.

Lori

Lori, do you mean one of the other selections??? We need feedback from everyone that is interested in the bookclub!

I'm happy to read The Kite Runner for September and to consume one of your other selections in the meantime. They all sounded interesting, particularly Middlesex. :7

ETA: OK, I just ordered The Kite Runner and Middlesex. Even if they don't wind up being our book club selections, they still sound pretty interesting. (I also ordered Radio On by Sarah Vowell who is one of my new favorite authors. If you haven't read her books, they are funny and thought-provoking non-fiction essays about American history, politics and culture.)

The Kite Runner will be fine with me, as is September for the discussion.

Lunacat, if you like essays, have you tried Anne Lamott? I don't especially agree with her politics, but her essays are honest and humorous.

Hi Robin,

I haven't read Anne Lamott. I'm not a Christian or a Republican so I don't tend to read books with a strong influence from either of those arenas, but I do enjoy humor no matter the religious/political arena from which it originates! :D I might have to check her out sometime.

Thanks!

Hi back, Lunacat

Ms Lamott is a Christian, but she is definetly not a Rebulican. There is so much truth in her essays, that I can ignore her views that I don't agree with. You and I would probably disagree about which of her statements we feel are true and correct, and which to ignore, but that's what makes us unique. :)

I got the Republican thing from Amazon. I looked at descriptions of her books before I responded to your post but I guess I got the wrong impression. Oops.

The ability to disagree and be unique is what makes life so fun! :7 Thanks again for the book recommendation.

OK with me. I'll see if I can get it from the library. If not, I'll buy it. Cool. Something new to read!!!!

I read that about her but I (gasp) haven't seen the movie yet!! I've seen her on The Daily Show and have heard her on NPR. She has a very distinctive voice.

OK, next weekend, I will rent The Incredibles! I promise!

I've already read The Kite Runner, so I can discuss it now, or wait til September. Either way is fine with me. I probably won't read anything new this summer since I already have a line up of books I've been waiting to get to. I'm in the middle of Running With Scissors if anyone is interested in that one. It's really quite good, just a little disturbing when you really think about it.

Is it too late for me to join? I would love to be in the book club, and I have heard wonderful things about the book Kite runner. When do we start?

Susan

Susan,

It's not too late to join! I think we'll be discussing the book in September but that isn't written in stone yet. Keep checking back to see what the verdict is. :)

I'd love to join your book club if I wasn't taking a women's literature class this summer. I have to read 1 book every week

The Kite Runner was excellent and is a very fast read - I read it in a week but I was on vacation. Maybe I'll join you when my class is over :)

Kerrie, I have wanted to buy Running with Scissors for the longest time. I know it is disturbing, that is why I haven't read it yet.

Speaking of Anne Lamott, she does write beautifully, and she definitely isn't a Republican. :) I am the total opposite of her, I feel I have a lot of conservative values, but wouldn't call myself a Christian. I have never heard of Sarah Vowell, I will have to check her out.

Speaking of essays, I love David Sedaris. He is hilarious.

Well, I have already ordered The Kite Runner, and a couple other books, a novel-The End of the Affair by Graham Greene, and a book of poetry, Delights and Shadows, by Ted Kooser. Terri Gross did an interview with him on Fresh Air on NPR, and he has some of the most beautiful poems. Just regular everyday things that he observes, and he turns them into, well-poetry. :)

Lori

I LOVE David Sedaris! :D I had read everything of his and have Dress Your Family in Courderoy and Denim on CD (Six to Eight Black Men is a riot). I ordered Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules without reading a description first and was disappointed that it was a collection of short stories he edited but didn't write. The stories are very good but I was hoping for new material by him. BTW, Sarah Vowell wrote the epilogue for it. Small world, eh?

Darn! My mom had Running With Scissors and I came home with it by mistake. I just saw her and returned it, which now after this post, I wish I had read it before I gave it back to her.

It did look disturbing which is why I didn't dive in, too many other books to read. Maybe I can get it back.

Dani, I would try to get it back, becuase it is very critically acclaimed, and loads and loads of people loved it.

It will be a while before I read it. I just read a disturbing book, and I am the sensitive type. With the last book I read, I drove my husband nuts, I was crying a little bit, and talking about the unfairness of the world. OH BROTHER! :) :) :)

But, it's good to read those kinds of books, they get you thinking about how wonderful your own life is, and how wonderful life is in general.
