Body Fat

Ok, what am I doing wrong here? Any suggestion?

The one I posted gave me 23.5
The other one 13%?? (I wish :))

The only thing different about the 1st one, I don't see an area where you would list your height...Am I missing it?

TIA

Jennifer,
That happened to me too, until I read the instructions on how to measure your neck. Measure BELOW the larynx, dipping down in front. The measurement is much smaller at that part.

Jennifer, see my post above about measuring the neck.

I'm wondering how these work? I think the neck and the wrist measurement indicates your frame size, and the others are measured accordingly. My waist and thighs might be considered lean on someone with a larger bone structure, but on my small frame, I'm carrying too much fat. I always suspected this.

Very interesting!

This was extremely helpful. Thank you for posting. Now I have a goal which is very motivating. I want to ultimately achieve 18% body fat!

This was extremly helpful, Thank you for the other link!!

I got home from lunch and got my exact measurements for my neck. It measures at 11.5 inches. Does this sound right?

Putting in all my info;
This time I got a different # once again... 17.5% BF

Totally confused, I give up...LOL :)

I did both tests and got the same answer. Both were much higher than what my caliper, Omron and BF scale reads.

I am, however, delighted to learn that my thigh measurement is down...almost an inch!

I'd use the tests as a **gauge**...I wouldn't take it to Vegas.

20%. The section discussing the accuracy of the test explains that it can vary from the truth a bit, so I think take it with a grain of salt.

The best way to measure BF is the way the showed on the reality show Work Out a couple of weeks ago. Like Ella said is by submerging your body in water and letting a specialized machine take your body weight and body fat percentage. In the link that Jennifer posted they explained that a measurement with their method doesn't mean that's your exact measurement for your BF % just that the measurement you get will be on a certain range (for anyone of you that took statistics in college it will mean that the measurement you get falls in a confidence interval, so it can be a bit lower than the number you get or a bit higher than the number you get). I have a scale that reads my BF % and the measurements I get I take with a grain of salt. I use it however to track my progress. Since the machine is programmed with the same method to measure body fat even if I'm not sure the measurements are 100% accurate I know that if I get a lower measurment my bf is lower overall (even if the number I get is not the exact measurement). I measure my bf every two months and I did it about a week ago. Compared to my measurement two months ago I lost 3% of bf. I don't know how accurate the number is, but since I used the same machine two months ago I know my bf is lower.

As far as the healthy range, I've read many conflicting numbers. I thought 18-25% is normal for women and 13-19% normal for women athletes, but I've read many variations on those numbers so I don't know which one to believe.

One thing to remember about body fat: where you carry it determines your health risks. You can have a higher/normal body fat % and carry it in your hips/butt and you'll have less health risk than someone who carries it in their midsection (more fat near the heart).

I don't get this measurement actually. It asks your weight, but not your height. And then it asks for the measurement around the widest part of your hips. So what if you don't have fat there, but you just happen to have wider hips? And the measurements around your thigh and calf? If you have muscular legs, that would make the measurement higher.

I'm not buying the reading.

Agreed Donna. It doesn't ask for a waist measurement at all! It did say in the disclaimer that if you're fit, it could be off by something like 3 to 4%. That could make quite a difference. I've had my body fat done by caliper recently (by an exercise physiologist), and it said I was around 19 to 20%. This one said I was almost 30%!

I have Covert's book with this test in it. It does mention the disclaimer that if you are very fit, it will be off. Anyhow, for those who don't have calipers, it can be used as a way to measure progress. Melissa
