Body Fat Percentage

Every now and then postings are referring to body fat percentage. Does anyone know how to measure it without using a caliper? Way back when I was in college,(back in '82) I took a "fitness for living" class and we did it by measuring certain body areas tied in with weight etc. I know it is not entirely accurate but could give me an estimate.

I have noticed some additional definition, smaller measurements, and a little weight loss ( I really don't need to lose any) but would like to know if my fat percentage is lower. Also what is a good % to strive for? It seems 16% is mentioned quite often. What % do you have to worry about messing up your cycles, etc.? Mine seem to be messed up a little since I started doing a rotation about 12 weeks ago. At times in my life,I had the tendecy to be irregular but over the last year or so my cycles were pretty good. Maybe this isn't related at all but just curious.

I am sort of curious if Cathe knows what her bodyfat % is.

Thanks,

Lynn W

Lynn,

Hi! I check my body fat with a hand held device. You put your height, weight, age into the machine and hold it straight out from your chest with your arms straight and with your feet together. I find it pretty accurate. It is very similar to the body fat scales. A chart that came with my body fat tester said that a healthy body fat for women is 18-25%. I am right a 18% and feel I would still be healthy at 12-15%. That is my goal. I bought the machine through AFAA, but you can buy them lots of places now.

Also, my body fat measures a percent or two higher with the machine than the calipers.

Now we all have to know...

....what this contraption is and where do you get it????!!!:-hmmm :-hmmm I got my bodyfat percentage tested at the Y 1-1/2 years ago, and I'd like to see what it is now.

PLEASE let us know!!!!!!!!! :-jumpy Another toy!!! I love gadgets!!!!

Thanks, Beverly

But what is AFAA? What is the name of this device called? I think I will probably be getting my checkbook out soon.

Thanks,

Hey HB!

I saw one of these devices at ExerCare down by Belden Village on Whipple Rd. They have it sitting up at the front desk. I can't remember the price on it. We might have to take a roadtrip to Belden! :D Your-Friend-In-Fitness, DebbieH :)

Body Logic Body Fat Analyzer

Hello!

This contraption is a body logic body fat analyzer made by Omron. AFAA is the Aerobic and Fitness Association of America. I have my aerobic certification through them. Anyway, this device uses "bioimpedence technology to measure the bodys resistance to a weak electrical current." If you would like to see what one looks like and/or buy one, Go to www.afaa.com Then click on the Shop AFAA at e-fitness and then go to Health Products. They also give a phone number at the site. I know that some department stores sell them now to. I think JCpenney does. I notice they all run around the same price though.

Let me know what you think of it after you check it out.

The machine is great. All my aerobic students loved it when I was teaching.

RE: Body Logic Body Fat Analyzer

I have a Tanita Bodyfat scale. You put in you height and when you step on it'll give you your weight and your BF% I love mine!! It works the same as the Body Logic, using the electrical current. I think both are great. You can get these scales partically anywhere too!!

Hi Lynn!

AFAA is a fitness educator that certifies instructors. It stands for:Aerobic and Fitness Association of America. I don't remember what the fat-tester machine is called but I did see one at Exercare. Do you have those near you? Your-Friend-In-Fitness, DebbieH :)

Body Fat Question?

Since we are talking about body fat...
I had my body fat checked at the gym. The guy was afraid to really pinch me. He took 4 measurements and told me that I was 22% body fat. But, I recently bought a body fat tester on mothernature.com. It took one measurement and it was above my right hip bone. It says that I am 26% body fat. Are these accurate? I don't feel like the guy at the gym got an accurate measure but I was very frustrated with thinking it was 26%. So, what do you think of the Accu-measure body fat tester? Thanks for any input.

RE: Body Logic Body Fat Analyzer

I also have one of these. I love mine also. I got mine at a local sporting goods store, but I have seen them since cheaper on the Web. Just do a search.

RE: Body Fat Question?

I got one of these free, when I ordered my heart rate monitor. I find it hard to use. I get anything from 18 to 26% when I use it. My scale says I'm about 22% :'( . Which is about what I am when I put my measurements into the formulas I have run across on the web.

RE:Thanks DebbieH but no Exercare here

however, Beverly gave me a web-sight to check out. It was www.afaa.com in the health products area. I am going to check it out now.

I think I'll go back to the Y, pay them $10.00...

....and let them go to work with their calipers again, 'cause the price of the gadget is way too high for me. I don't need the fat percentage test done a lot...it's been 1-1/2 yrs since I had it done, so I think I'll just let the Y people do it. I can go 15 times for the price of the machine, and that will last me about 7 years.

My priorities are Cathe tapes for that much money. Or a large payment on an Airdyne bike.

Sort of wish I had one of those gadgets though!!! :D

RE: I agree with you too - way to much $

I just checked the posting and noticed your reply. I was surprised at the cost too. I can find much better uses for my money. ( new cathe tape, work-out clothes, a lot of things) We do not belong to any fitness clubs, but maybe I can just pay somebody there to do it for me. May be I'll check out the Y too.

RE: Body Fat Question?

I bought a Tanita bodyfat scale today at Sports Authority. I was not to sure whether it was a good purchase, but happy with what I have read here. I hope it motivates me to keep working out! (I have a LOT of bodyfat to lose)
