Black-Tie Affair

My DH just told me today that we have been invited to a black tie affair this coming Friday. As I have never been to a black tie affair...WHAT DO I WEAR? Also, does this mean that he HAS to wear a tux?

Yep, black tie means tux for guys and cocktail dress or a long dress for women. Sometimes invitations say "black tie optional" which I think is just confusing...what man is going to wear a tux if he's given the "option" of not?

Sounds fancy! Hope you have fun

Black Tie means formal. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates. White Tie means ultra-formal. Black tie leaves a lot to the ladies's discretion.

Tammy, I think you should make your DH produce the invitation so you can see for yourself what it says--lol! I simply cannot trust my darlin' DH with this kind of information.

I like the idea of a cocktail dress with strappy shoes. :)

LOL! Thanks ladies! I will ask that he bring the invitation home. And yes, I am lucky he gave me nearly a weeks notice!

Yes, unfortunately, he has to wear a tux, and you have to wear a cocktail dress or gown. My first thought would be "is there anyway I can get out of this?". Of course if it's the wedding of a close family member or something like that, I go.

LOL, Nancy. I feel exactly the same way when we get these kinds of invitations!

LOL!!!! You read my mind and I AM trying to get out of it. He insists he doesn't have to wear a tux and I keep telling him that Black Tie means just that....Black Tie! He says if he has to wear a Tux he ain't goin'......my fingers are crossed!

Ohhhhh - I love to get all glitzed up every now and again - and I love how my DH looks in a tux! Of course I wouldn't enjoy it all the time, but every so often I think it's fun. It also makes me really appreciate my comfy clothes when I get home and change! LOL. If you go, have fun.

I agree! I think the most fun part of an evening like that is getting ready for it. It's like a costume party; you really are becoming a completely different person. But after about an hour in heels,make-up, and fancy dress, I'm ready to go home, wash my face, and put on the flannel pjs!!!!:)

HI Tammy
Have you seen the invitation yet? Unless it says black tie optional, he must wear a tux and you must, as stated above, wear a cocktail dress or gown. I would go with the coctail dress. I have had luck with Neiman Marcus website for black tie cocktail dresses on sale. If you order today and get a few you can always return the ones you don't use. I think return shipping is free.

Thanks for the info Judy....I always do better shopping on line for some reason! I am hoping to see the invite this evening.

Antother option is SmartBargains.com. It's Loehmann's online. I just ordered three dresses to choose from for my office's Christmas party. Not a black tie event (thank god, since I'd never get my husband in a tux), but I needed (well, maybe "wanted") a new cocktail dress. They have gowns, long dresses, short ones, and usually at a good price.

Hope you find something great, no matter where you get it!
