I was doing an online search yesterday for a doula here in Edmonton, when I came across a curious statement on one of their websites. The woman said that she preferred to work with women who were clients at the publicly funded Stony Plains Birthing Centre. My ears perked up. What? A birthing centre? Here in Alberta?? *Publicly funded????* What is this??
So I began searching for information on this strange phenomenon. Sure enough, after much digging, I came across a short paragraph about this birthing centre, located only 45 minutes from my house, where women can have their babies with midwives - and it's paid for by Alberta Health Care!!!
I phoned their number, thinking this was too good to be true; there's a catch. Midwives in Alberta are not publicly funded. That's a well-known fact. We have to pay thousands of dollars for midwife care. My phone message was returned this morning, and I still can't believe my ears. Yes! The birthing centre is publicly funded! Yes! They can take me on as a client! Yes! They can book a prenatal appointment for me for May 30!! I feel like I've been lifted out of my reality and plopped into a dream world.
I've made no secret of the fact that I really dislike the style of my ob/gyn, and my last prenatal appointment didn't alter that. I am so excited to be able to switch! Apparently this birthing centre is the only publicly funded birthing centre in Alberta, and they've only been in existance for 5 years. They've never advertised because until recently their funding was insecure. Apparently, they're very busy, and are getting enough business by word of mouth.
DH and I go for an orientation on May 18. This is more exciting than waiting for an ultrasound! LOL!
Happy, happy, happy!!!
