barbell set

I believe I've found a barbell set to buy. I went by Dick's Sporting Goods yesterday and they have a 100 lbs. set on sale for 24.99. It is a vinyl set and has the clips to hold on the barbells like I've seen on the w/o's. There is a problem though. I did some bicep curls with it with 8 lbs plates on and it makes my wrists hurt when I bring the bar up. I suspected this might happen because when I curl with my dumbbells, when I get to the top, my dumbbells are not held straight, they are a little bit at a slant due to my wrists. My wrists are a problem because of my RA. With the barbell being a straight bar, my wrists have to stay in that position all the way up.

I didn't get it yesterday but I'm thinking of going back this weekend to get it. I can always use it on leg presses and use my dumbbells on curls. Hopefully my wrists will "heal up" and not hurt as much.

You've found the solutio yourself: Simply use the barbell for squats, lunges, chest presses, or whatever moves don't irritate your wrists, and change to dumbbells (which are often more effective anyway, because they work each side equally, and work more stabilizing muscles) for moves like bicep curls.

Thanks Kathyrn... I am itching to go back and get that set!!! I am definitely buying a bar pad though.

Jane-
I have the same problem with RA and it can put limits on some moves like barbell curls. I have to reduce the weight load if I do curls with the bar or it just doesn't go past a few reps. Some days I'm more successful than others but never seem to have the problem if I just substitute dumbbells.

Yes you do hit road blocks with RA. I usually just deal with it by figuring out how the heck I'm going get around it. :) Most of the time there is a modification that works as well as the original way of doing it.
