Barbell question

I am into my 3rd week of working out with Cathe, CTX DVD, and am thinking of getting the troy lite barbell. I am using 3 and 5 lbs. dumbell right now. Will the barbell be more effective? As a beginner, should I get the troy lite barbell set or should I just get lighter plates (1.5, 2.5 and 5 lb. plates) than what is included in the set. This is my first time working with weights and am not sure how my body will react to this. I just want lean muscles and a toned look. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good for you for starting a weight training program!!! Many women are afraid of lifting but it is the best thing you could do for yourself!! I will say for sure get the Troy set. Even though you may be at lighter weights now, you WILL work up and need those heavier poundages. I have a Troy barbell, but did not purchase the weights to go with it since I already had some. Doesn't the set come with 2.5 plates??
 
The set comes with four 2.5 lb. plates, two 5 lb. plates and two 7.5 lb. plates. If that is too much for you, the barbell, which weighs only 5 lbs., can be used by itself. The Troy lite system will not be too heavy for you, and there is no reason to purchase lighter plates with it. Good luck!
 
I purchased my troy lite bar and clips with no plates and bought the plates locally to avoid paying shipping charges. A 'normal' price is 50 cents per pound, but you can get them cheaper at walmart or when sports authority has a sale.

I have the FIRM barbell. I got it about 7 years ago and I use it for Cathe tapes. I don't know about the Ivanko name, but mine has the rubberized outer sleeve on the bar for comfort on the neck and hands (bar is 10#). It has easy lock collars but only comes with enough plates to go to 30#'s. You can buy extra's anywhere. In my case, I stole plates from my dh's smith machine to go up to 60#s. I don't think it's as easy to change weights with as the Troy barbell though, because of the steel plates.
