Barbell plate storage

Kellyro77

Cathlete
So having recently acquired Cathe's 60lb barbell set, I'm now in the place of needing to find practical storage for the plates when they're not in use - preferably something with a small footprint.

What do you all use?

I also purchased a couple more 25lb plates from Dick's this weekend to add a bit more flexibility in my weight selections. Happy to see that Cathe didn't develop the bar so it was so specialized that it would only fit her plates, which, when you factor in shipping, are massively expensive. (I'm lucky I found those two 25lb plates, too - someone had hidden the last two at the store - yeah, they probably wanted them for themselves, but ya snooze ya lose!)

@Kellyro77 , congrats on the new equipment! You can make a plate rack (if you have the tools or a friend who does out of 2x4's inexpensively - plans are online). Or you can purchase a plate rack. Some plate racks can be attached to a stud in the wall, others are free-standing. We store our larger plates on our squat/power rack. The smaller plates are stored on a shelf in a large closet in our workout room. It will depend on your storage/workout area and what you're willing to spend (or not). I think a lot of people initially just store them on the floor or in a box on the floor.

We have a version of this (not this one but a similar style).
ETA:
Weight plate storage tree

There seem to be lots of options on Amazon. (We found ours cheap at a used sports store but before that we had the plates on the floor. )
If we hadn't found it, we would have used some YouTube videos and built an organizing box with pegs. I personally prefer the tree for ease of use and small footprint.

My Cathe plates are currently stored on a peg with a flat metal bottom (it was part of a system that I bought at Aldi's). The rest of my plates are in an old plastic milk crate (on their sides). The peg thingy is a pain, though, because I have to take the lighter ones off to get to the heavier ones. My plastic crate is a bit of a finger pincher, if I'm careless, but these 2 strategies work better than the large trunk I used to have all of them in. I had to remove a lot of weights to get to the bottom ones, and usually... the lid fell down on my head just because the hinges were ornery. lol Here's the one that I hope to get someday: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DH4MJ757/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

It's a 3 legged tree plate holder. I really like some of the wall mounted storage systems, but if I can find a smaller home that works for my son's needs (in my price range), I'll be moving. I don't want to put any holes in the wall of a house I might need to sell quickly, so I've been organizing on bookshelves, a rolling rack, and the plates on the floor (stored in the crate and on the peg).

Was there supposed to be a link with your post, Linda? I'm not sure I understand what your "version of this" is supposed to be.

Thanks everyone for sharing your set ups. Stuff for me to consider.

@Kellyro77 ,as you're contemplating your barbell set-up, you might consider a pair of the little donuts, the 1.25# plates for progressive overload for shoulders, bi's & tri's. Some people buy washers from the hardware store, weigh 'em and glue 'em together for even smaller weights but I find the 1.25# enough. You'll be glad to have those 25# too.

@Debinmi oh! Thanks for the suggestion of the 1.25lbers. I didn't even know those existed. Yes, I'm all for being able to micro-load to assist with progressive overload.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on the racks. I have some thinking (and measuring) to do.

This is a neat set of “extra” micro plates for add-ons….

Wow, I like those! I haven’t seen them before. I have 1.25 spring loaded micro plates and I use them all the time—on the barbell and on dumbbells too for those times when 20 lbs. is too much but 15 is not enough. The brand I have is called July Body. I will try to post a link if anyone is interested.

I have a weight plate holder similar to cataddict's one which also has a spot for the barbell. I have 2 x 0.5kg plates which I can use with my barbell and my EZ Curl barbell which are good for micro-loading. I also use 0.5kg wrist weights with my hex dumbbells for micro-loading. Would have liked Cathe's micro-load gloves but shipping to NZ is expensive. Those clip-on weights look good though; I've never seen them before.

I do own those 2 x 0.5kg iron donuts. I also have a ez barbell I make use off.
The clip on are very handy for adding plates quickly. Micro-load gloves are a must during STS rotation.
All these equipment are handy for anyone embarking on STS original for the purpose it was made for.#progressive load #one rep max.

I have July Body too! I haven't used them yet. I'm still lifting pretty light, but I'm getting ready to try them, because I'm "stuck" at 10 lbs and not ready for and don't own anything in between.
