hi everyone

i thought i'd just ask you guys who already have your little ones on solids - which brands did you like? i had heard to use the tender harvest fruits and veggies but cannot find them! gerber has an organic brand, and then i saw a nature's best variety. what do you all use?

also, i tried cereal for finn, my 6 month old, last night. i don't think i got one bite in - he simply wouldn't open his mouth, and if he did, he spit it out! any hinte? it is all new to me.

thanks

There are a few organic brands but they are pricey, I use mostly gerber and beachnut as Ashley eats about 2 jars a meal. Be patient with Finn, it is all so new to him. With both my girls, it was a disaster at first. It is just so different for them going from breast or bottle to solids. Keep at it, and try little bits at a time. If you are trying oatmeal, next time buy rice cereal. eventually Finn wil get used to being fed.

I made my own - it's pretty easy and you can use veggies are in season. Especially at the beginning, it's nice to be able to make up small portions so there's less waste. You'd be amazed at how many baby servings of sweet potatoes you can get out of one potato! I got a great book that had lots of info about what foods to make for what months and how to make them.

For the first cereal feedings, one thing you can try is to thin out the cereal a little more at first and then thicken it up as they get used to eating it. I start out by making the cereal with breastmilk/formula (whatever they're on) so the taste is a little familiar, and make it almost gravy-like (thinish gravy, that is, not my father's gravy that you can stand a spoon in! ;-) ) If you can get them used to that, then make it a little thicker and so on, until they're able to figure out how to keep it in their mouth (it's a pretty cute phase - keep a camera handy :) )

When they're drinking milk (which is all they've had up to this point) the tongue thrust motion is different from what they need for solids, so they need some time to adjust and learn. It may take awhile, so just keep at it and it will get better.

Hope that helps!!

I use Earth's Best Organics. I also use Gerber, and my daughter will eat both.

Are you using the flakey cereal in the box that you mix with liquid? I had a terrible time getting my daughter to eat it, so I let it slide and went to the veggies and fruits first. Then I tried the jarred cereal and she eats that much better. I think it may have been a texture thing for her.

thanks everyone! i think i may try apples or sweet potatoes tonight as i am not getting anywhere. and yes, it was the flaked oatmeal that i tried mixed with breastmilk. so it isn't bad persay to try a fruit or veggie? any issues with trying that at night?

My pediatrician said at 4 months I could give dd#1 cereal and/or fruits/veggies. It will be trial and error to figure out finn's preferences as well as teaching him to eat from a spoon. I do remember though, that the doc said only to try one knew food a day due to possible allergies.
