Author Recommendation ~Thanks~

Not sure who recommended Harlan Coben's mystery novels, but thanks! I've been having just way too much fun reading them. I'm in love with his main character Myron Boltaire, and feel like he's one of my best friends. I also love Coben's character, Win. What a pair.

I've purchased several of Janet Evanovich novels, starting with the first, One for the Money. I can't wait to get started on them, when I'm done "hanging out" with Myron, Win, and the rest of the gang.

Any other recommendations for novels/writers along these lines? I don't like political or John Grisham-type mysteries.

I am a HUGE fan of Sidney Sheldon. Anything similar to his novels?

I love Harlan Coben and I have read all of Janet Evanovich's novels.

Here some others that you may enjoy.

Sue Grafton - Alphabet series (She's up to "T" now)

Sara Paretsky - V.I. Warshawski series

Lee Child - Jack Reacher novels. He has several and all are excellent.

Greg Iles - Third Degree, The Quiet Game, Dead Sleep, Blood Memory and Turning Angel

John D. MacDonald - Travis McGee series. These are excellent. My favorite of all times.

Enjoy!

We are huge Stephanie Plum (the Evanovich books) at our house. We also like Coben, too. So, based on that, have you tried the Jack Reacher books written by Lee Child? The humor element isn't there, so they may fall into the type you don't like. They're very suspenseful.

OMG, lioness, we have the same taste in authors! And we post at the same time. Maybe I should be embarrassed to tell you this but my oldest son is named Travis after Travis McGee (there's a little story there I'll share if you're interested).

Beth,

I would love to hear the story. If I ever had a female pet I was going to name her "Miss Agnes" after his car.

Jane and Beth- Thanks for the recommendations. I haven't read any of the authors you suggested. Although I do like the humor aspect of Coben's character, Myron, I'm not opposed to reading just straight mysteries.

I don't find Coben a strong writer, as far as writing goes. He repeats a lot of the same words, his vocabulary isn't very scholary, and his sentence structures aren't varied enough for me. I know this is prob. because he needs to keep it "true" to his characters' personalities. I just really like the plots he spins. In the past I haven't read many mystery novels, just Sidney Sheldon, which I consider to be a strong writer and an excellent storyteller. So, I am hoping that I can find an author who is a bit of both. Wouldn't that be perfect?! Because I read so many scholary, classic-type books for work (AP English teacher), I enjoy a simple read, but still well written.

I'm so excited to start buying (and reading!) some of the books you ladies suggested. Thanks again. I am such a book whore!

Jane, what are you waiting for?! Get that female pet now! I love it.

Ok, so the story is this... when I was pregnant and we found out we were having a boy, my husband insisted he be named Travis and he told me it was after this character Travis McGee. I had obviously never read any of the books at that point. So, we just started calling him Travis, though I wasn't even yet showing, I don't think! Well, toward the end of my pregnancy, or maybe it was right after he was born... I finally read my first Travis McGee book, and I wasn't so sure I actually wanted my son named after him! To Larry (DH), Travis McGee symbolizes a really cool guy, but I saw him as more of a womanizer and I wasn't sure that little sweet baby I was holding should have been named after him. Now that he's 9, well, maybe it seems to fit a bit better.... :)

Jane, I also noticed in the 40's thread that we are also both 46 -- I turn 47 in October.

Yeah - gotta love that Win.

Robert Crais' Elvis Cole series is good one and very much like Harlan's. Another really great author is Dennis Lehane. Speaking of legal thrillers, have you tried Lisa Scottoline? Lisa Gardner is another excellent author. As mentioned - you can't go wrong with Lee Child and Greg Iles.

I believe it was you, Waterlily. :) THANKS!!!

I just can't wait to get started on all of these recommendations. I printed out each list! Gosh, you ladies never fail to come through!

Again, many thanks!

My sister is named Jean Louise, Scout's "real" name from To Kill a Mockingbird. My mom was reading the book when my sister and I were born (we're twins). To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my favorite movies. I loved the book as well.

Beth,

That is cute story. Travis is a bit of a womanizer but I think he is kind hearted and a really cool guy. There was a tv movie made out of one of his books a while ago (a long while) and Sam Elliot played Travis. I always thought that was a good fit.

Yes, I'll be 47 in August, so I'm couple of months older than you. :)
