Hi Ladies,
I am flying to Austin on Dec. 21 and will be there until Jan. 2. My question is to see if anybody lives around the southern area (near Lakeway, I believe it is)? (My boyfriend works as a crane operator and is putting up the steel structure for a new Dillards store.)

Anyway, I will be taking care of his 2 boys while there and am looking for ideas of what to do with them. Also, does anyone know where I might be able to go get "day" passes for working out at a health club?

Thanks in advance. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Patti:

You are going to LOVE Austin, (except for the traffic). There are several Whole Foods Markets, but go to the one on South Lamar (close to downtown) because it is such a trip. They have different food and wine "stations" where you can buy a glass of wine, get some sushi, etc., and keep shopping. That's MY KIND of shopping:p Austin is a very fitness-inclined city, so there are lots of excellent parks and fitness facilities. Two that you might want to check out are Lake Austin Spa and The Crossing. Both are "destination spas," but I believe you can get a day pass for their workout facilities. You can find them both on the internet. Also, there is a terrific weekly (spacing out on the name - starts with a "c") that you can pick up at any restaurant or Whole Foods. It has zillions of great restaurant reviews and listings, shopping, music venues, movies, etc. Have a great time!

Also, Lakeway has quite an impressive facility. I bet you can get day or week passes there, too. That would be closer to where you will be.:7

Thank you ladies for your responses. I was also thinking of checking out a YMCA but not sure if they offer day/weekly passes.

Hi Patricia,

I go to PureAustin gym when I want to go for a day. They have day passes for $15 per day. Awesome gym. I do not believe they have daycare. They have a gym up north and one downtown. Here's the link:

We also have a new Lifetime Fitness facility in North Austin. It is off of hwy 620. It would not be too hard to get to from Lakeway. I have not been there yet b/c they charge $30 for a day pass. Here is their website:

How old are the kids? I have a five year old and know alot of indoor playgrounds that are popular with the young kids.

I live in the Austin area and there are a lot of fun things to do with the kids. I would love to give you suggestions but it depends a lot on how old the boys are.

The boys are 8 and 12. I would like to find something to do during the day with them; like go to some kind of playground (anything inexpensive), a zoo, ....(?)

I am thinking that after the boys' dad gets off from work, it would be nice for me to get out of the motel room and go workout. There is no workout room at this motel.

Thank you so much, ladies, for your suggestions. I am writing them down and will do further "research"!

Here's some links for you

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/zilker/

This link is for Zilker Park. There are many things to do at Zilker and most of them are free or very low cost. There is sometimes a small charge for parking in the park. There is a huge playground, a hike and bike trail, a Science & Nature Center, and the Botanical Gardens. There is also a special Christmas light display called the Trail of Lights (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/zilker/) that will be open the first couple of nights you are in town.

Zoo - I recommend the Austin Zoo. It is a small rescue zoo but it is a lot of fun for the kids. http://www.austinzoo.org/

I do not recommend the Capitol of Texas Zoo.

This is a link to the museums in Austin. My 8 year old really enjoys the Children's Museum but the 12 year old might be too old for it. The Texas State History Museum is really neat. The State Capitol and The Capitol Area Visitors Center are both free. Parking will run $5-7 though. Same thing with the Texas Memorial Museum which is on the UT campus.

I hope this helps! Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.
