Sabine:

soooooo, tell me: what does Paula Begoun recommend for fine, straight, thin, hair that plagues the life of you and me?!?!?!?!

I'd love to know what products you use and for what effect, what you have found that works: irrespective of price!!

Thanks!

Clare

Hi Clare,

As you have probably guessed, you and I have the hardest time finding products for our hair type because our hair can get weighed down so easily. Here's some of her recs. and some of my personal favs.

Shampoos-Paula recommends alternating between a shampoo that removes product build up and has no conditioning agents and a shampoo that is volumizing and this is what I do as well.
No Build Up Shampoos- Joico Resolve Chelating Shampoo (this also removes mineral deposits if you swim a lot or have well water), TIGI Bed Head Self Absorbed Mega Vitamin Shampoo, Framesi Biogenol Color Care Clarifying Shampoo, Redken Color Extend Shampoo or Redken Headstrong Shampoo.
Volumizing Shampoos- Charles Worthington Results Everday Shine Shampoo for Dull, Lifeless Hair, ISO Daily Balancing Cleanse Gentle Shampoo, Joico Volissima Volumizing Shampoo, Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two, Bumble and Bumble Thickening Shampoo, ISO Multiplicity Texture Shampoo, Redken Smooth Down Shampoo (my current favorite).

Conditioners- Leave ins are generally not recommended for our hair type so I have not included those although there is a small list if you want it. Let me know. The following are all rinse out conditioners.
Conditioners- Charles Worthington Results Superconditioner, Joico Lite Daily Conditioner, SEXY Concepts Big Sexy Hair, Big Volume Conditioner, Back to Basics Marine Color Protection Conditioner, KMS Color Vitality Color Revitalizer, Redken So Long Conditioner, TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Conditioner.

Paula's number one rule is don't believe what you read on the bottle. Even if a shampoo or conditioner says it's for fine hair, or super dry hair, it's the formulation that counts, not the marketing copy on the bottle. For instance, I would have never considered the Redken Smooth Down Shampoo because reading the copy would make it seems totally inappropriate for my hair type. Yet it works great! Likewise, most conditioners for fine hair are actually quite weighty because they include so many detangling agents. Bad!!

Let me know if you need recs. for styling products (I generally don't use any except hairspray and the occasional use of a shine serum to control flyaways).

Thanks Sabine, for this list of hair products. I too have fine, thin, long, dry hair and am going to have low lights (my first time) put in on Friday ~ adding to the damage.

I love long hair. I had my DH cut mine off above the shoulders a few days ago. I have fine thin hair. It is so frustrating to deal with. It depends on what type of style you want to use. If I want mine straighter I use Bed Head moisture maniac, that shampoo seems to stay the same, conditioner is Graham Webb's Stick Straight. I love the Matrix Sleek Look smoothing system water free lock out spray. I use this in place of hair spray, those little peices of hair do not wave up and frizz, like normal.I did use the iron smoother from this same line for flat irons. It worked well but my poor fragile hair broke off so much from the flat iron. I tried using the Bed Head moisture maniac conditioner but ended up with little fly away hair strands. Also Matrix Smooth & Sleek shampoo and conditioner work well. Now If I want to go for more volume I use the Bed Head mosture maniac shampoo and the Redkin volumizing leave in conditioner. It does not leave the shine the other products do though.

I use bumble & bumble thickening shampoo and spray and don't know how I lived without it before!!!

Sabine and ladies:

what fabulous information. You are all a veritable treasure trove!

Now, tell me what do you all use as styling products? To volumize? A mousse? What does Ms. Paula suggest? To encourage waviness?

I like to max the volume as much as poss. I have been using "Full Frame" by Redken, which I really like but it does leave my hair a little sticky. My hair won't hold curl with this product though: it curls as I dry it, but after half an hour the curl has dropped to waviness, which I am still grateful for, don't get me wrong!!!

I'm wondering: is there such a thing as a product that will encourage volume without the need for blow drying?

Any tips from anyone are gratefully received. Thanks again Sabine for your list. I now have way more options to peruse!

I sometimes use a product called Brush and Ready. It's a great smelling powder that is meant for hair. All you do it squeeze the bottle and a poof of powder comes out. It adds volume and lift and a it makes my hair brighter looking. It blends into any hair color. I have medium brown and the powder doesn't show. They market the product for days you don't have time to wash your hair or trying to grow your hair out more, but I use it for adding volume and shine.
