I followed Atkin's plan very strictly. I did the induction phase (>20 grams of carbs per day) for four weeks, lost about 15 lbs that first month. Went up to >50 carbs per day after, lost another 15 lbs, & then levelled out (36 years old, 5'3", 110 lbs).
I was definitely weaker the first couple of months. I had to reduce my weights by at least 5 lbs (depending on the body part). This didn't bother me much b/c I've been lifting for a long time so it didn't really affect my look & I was still going pretty heavy. But it only took about 2-3 months for me to get back to where I was before I began the diet.
I know a lot of people are skeptical about Atkins & its long term effects on health, but I think you can do the diet in a healthy way or you can do it in an artery-clogging way. After I turned 30 low fat just didn't work for me anymore--change in body chemistry or something.
I swear by this diet--it has completely changed my look & my life. It's also very easy to follow after you get the sugar addictions out of your system--you're never hungry on Atkins.
Anyway, if you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
