When I had a CT scan after my back injury a few weeks ago, the Dr. said I have the beginningsof arthritis in my neck. She said you can do exercises to help "Keep it at bay". Does anyone know of any??????????? I greatly appreciate any info. Thanks, Kay

Sorry -- I don't know of any exercises... but I do have a book on food remedies for various conditions (The Doctor's Book of Food Remedies -- it's great!), and arthritis is one of them.

Did your doctor tell you what kind of arthritis you have? I'll try to paraphrase to not violate any copyright laws...

The book discusses two forms of arthritis -- osteoarthritis and rhumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is more common. It's caused by wear and tear on cartilage. If you have this, take vitamin C. Apparently, Boston University did a study on osteoarthritis and found that people taking more than 200 mg of vitamin C a day were three times less likely to have the disease get worse (when compared to people taking less than 120 mg/day). Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and may also help generate collagen.

Rhumatoid arthritis is related to problems with the immune system. It occurs when the immune system begins attacking the body, causing swelling of the membrane that lines the joints and eventually eating away at the joints' cartilage. This form of arthritis is most affected by diet. The book recommends a diet low in saturated fat to reduce the production of prostaglandins (hormonelike substances contributing to inflammation). A low-(saturated-) fat diet may also hinder communications sent by the immune system (which helps joints heal by interrupting the body's inflammatory response). The book also recommends getting lots of Omega 3 fatty acids, either from eating cold-water fish (like trout, bluefin tuna, or mackerel) or taking fish oil supplements (especially those with EPA and DHA). According to the book, omega 3 fatty acids reduce prostaglandins and leukotrienes, another contributributor to inflamation.

Hope this helps!
