Are running shoes necessary...

if I'm just starting out and want to see if running really is for me? I wear Ryka N-Gage studio shoe for my step and other aerobic workouts. Would they be okay to wear while a test the waters???

Thanks!

Hey there! I'm not Cathe but I just wanted to say that I asked the same question of experienced runners here on the forum when I decided to try running about 6 months back. I was definately encouraged to pick up a pair of running shoes-even cheap ones-as opposed to wearing crosstrainers or some other type of shoe to run with. Once I decided that I liked running and was going to stick with it, I went out and bought a GOOD pair of shoes-again, upon encouragement from "the educated crowd". I am quite glad that I listened to them!

HTH!:)

Running shoes support you in different ways that cross trainers, so if you want to see if you like it, cross trainers won't really give you a good idea on that, unfortunately. And to think our ancestors used to run barefoot...

Thanks Wendy and Christine...guess I'll go find some "starter" running shoes!!!

I'll admit I've tried running before, but I'm not sure I gave it a real chance. I'm not fond of "jarring" types of excercise. Any tips on how to start will be appreciated. Hmmm...maybe I'll take this to the open forum section.

Thanks again!

tpf...I agree with Wendy and Christine also! You are wellcome to come on over to the Cheetah (runners) check-in, in the Check-in and Challenges forum and post your question. Alot of different level runners there that would be happy to help you get started...:)
