Are fish oil capsules safe??

I never really eat fish - only tuna from a can once in a blue moon and I read that article about how beneficial fish oil is - is it safe to take daily??

Hi Reba,

Fish oil capsules are safe as long as they have the words "molecularly distilled" on the label. That means they are not likely to have mercury contamination, which is associated with fatty fish.

I use the brand "Natrol" (purple bottle - get it at Walgreens), and keep them in the fridge for freshness and to avoid the fishy-burps. Yuck.

You're safer taking these capsules than eating tuna from a can I'm afraid... if you do eat Tuna, choose "chunk light" - Albacore (which is yummier) had a higher mercury content.

I agree with Joni, make sure they are molecularly distilled. Omega-3's are so important to our hearts, and not everyone eats fish, so these are a great way to get those essential fatty acids!
I personally get my Omega-3's from Shaklee. They test every "batch" they make to ensure they are safe (many companies don't do this unfortunately!) Their formulation is from the oil of cold-water fish - sardines, mackerel, herring, and anchovies - which is the best sourch for omega-3 fatty acids.
If your interested in Shaklee's Omega-3's, write me a personal email ([email protected]) and I'll let you know how to get them!

Thanks for the advice - I will head to Walgreens after work - though I am not looking forward to these "fishy burps" - gross!
