Annette:

I just bought a new pair of Ryka water running shoes. My other pair stayed wet all the time. I wore them one night, and they were still wet 24 hours later. As a result, they do not smell so nice. Is there anything I can do to help them dry faster?

Blessings,
Heather B.

Hi, Heather! Sorry you're having shoe trouble.

The way I handle my Ryka aqua shoes is: I rinse them out with tap water immediately after I get out of the pool, then I roll each shoe up in its own dry towel and squeeze all of the excess water that I can out of them. (If you do that, you might also consider sticking a few wads of paper towel inside the shoe as well to sop up more excess water within the shoe.) Then I untie the shoelaces and pull the shoes open a little bit to help with the airing out, then I place them in an open area (usually my little laundry room downstairs). I try not to put them immediately into a closet or anything like that, because there isn't enough air moving around. Try to put them in the airiest, sunniest spot you can immediately after use.

Do mind if I butt in and ask a question? What are the shoes specifically for? Aquajock, I had asked you some deep water running questions a few months back. I've been doing it and love it, but alas, my plantar fasciitis does not. My podiatrist swears I can't make it worse with swimming or deep water running. OK, then how come I always feel worse a day or two after it? Anyway, a friend of mine suggested maybe wearing shoes to help keep my foot from flexing so much. Would these aqua shoes that you ladies are talking about help with that perhaps? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Jennifer! Sorry I'm so long in responding.

Geez, your question is a toughie. For the life of me I can't figure out why your feet would be worse after a zero-impact aqua jogging session. It is possible that keeping your foot in a flexed position would be aggravating it, I suppose, but the Ryka aqua shoes (which look and operate exactly like a land athletic shoe) would not keep you from foot flexion.

I'll say this much: if you feel worse a day or two after an aqua session, it might not be the appropriate format for you even though you enjoy it. I'd ask my podiatrist for some more alternatives.

JMHO - Sorry I couldn't be more help!

Thanks A-Jock!! You're awesome. You know, it is crazy that it hurts. I have come to love deep water running and even swimming laps. With my heart rate monitor on, I can burn 700 cals in an hour. I burn 640 doing Low Max as a comparison. I'm 5'8" and 140 lb. I had no idea swimming/deep water running were such calorie burners. I know that I'll heal eventually. It's just extremely frustrating at the moment--especially when my doc and pt say swimming should not be hurting me. Who knows. Anyway, thank you so much for your response and your help in the past. Take care!
