Anyone make Pizzelle?

I made my first batch of pizzelle tonight. I used a traditional Italian recipe with anise and vanilla extract. They weren't hard to make, but I think they are kind of blah tasting. I add extra sweetener, but it didn't really help. Any ideas out there?
 
We mostly eat them just plain. However, Pizzelles are very good rolled up in a cone and filled with whipped cream or ice cream.
