Anyone love to paint???

Next weekend, DH and I are FINALLY going to paint our house! I am SO excited! We have lived here for two years and am so tired of looking at bare, white walls! I have some questions for those that are decor experienced:

1. I was thinking about painting the hall a shade darker that the living room. My thinking is that the darker hall will make the living room look larger; am I wrong? would that be a bad idea?

2. It is an open floor plan so the living room and dining room are sorta connected. I was wondering if it would look goofy to paint the wall that connects the dining room to the kitchen (the outside wall) a different color than the rest of the room. I wanted my kitchen to be a different color than the rest of the living room. There is a floor plan of what the area looks most similar to:

The color I have chosen for the living room is sort of a mossy beige color. I want to paint the kitchen a tea rose yellow. The colors look good next to each other on the samples.

comment and opinions anyone? TIA

Missy

ETA My furniture is a rusty color, if that makes a difference! :)

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I have absolutely no idea how to use color. I know what I like but have a terrible time putting things together so I always consult with a professional.

The colors you want to use sound pretty. How big is your hall? Is it wide or narrow and long? Will a dark color make the hall seem small?

Michele

It is a very wide and short hall that makes an "L" shape. It just leads from the front door to the bathroom and bedrooms. there is no windows, but it is a pretty open hall.

Missy, if you're just taklking about 1 wall it won't take much paint to cover it. Why don't you go ahead and use the color you're thinking of and if it doesn't work, then I would do it in the mossy beige color. The plan you have sounds really pretty. :)

Okay, here are my thoughts and questions:

1. I wouldn't paint your hall a darker colour. All it will do is make your hall look more closed in, particularly as it has no windows. Added to that, if you're already planning to have two different colours in the open space, you don't want to throw a third one in.

2. What colour are your kitchen cabinets, counter, etc.? I think it would be fine to paint your end dining room wall (the one that continues into the kitchen) a different colour, but I'm not sure I would make it a completely different colour, perhaps more like a different shade of what you're using in the bigger living room space.

I wouldn't say I love to paint but I love when it's finished.:) I just painted my living rm & dining rm. I used yellow in lr because it's on the small side and dark (not much sunlight) the connecting dr I used terra cotta (same color as a flower pot) which looks great with the mellow yellow (they named it - not me) Have fun painting!

I think I am decorator-challenged when it comes to paint colors, etc. Home Depot has a decorator that charged $50 to come to the house and give her professional advice. BUT you got a credit for $50 to use toward paint or whatever so it can be basically free. You might check that service out. I thought it was very helpful. I don't mind painting but don't want to re-paint because I didn't like the color so I want to get it right the first time. Good luck!

My table and cabinets are a natural walnut looking wood. My appliances are black and my counter tops are a textured gray. Yellow would look so sharp with it.
I am using the Martha Stewart Everyday color and she has these palettes with four different colors (the one I am getting my colors from), and the three I love all look so good together.
I did wonder about doing three different colors, but they aren't bold and busy colors, so I thought it may work. It may look busy after all it is all done. Hmmmm......pondering and imagining......

What colors did everyone else use all over their house?

Missy

Missy:

If Martha Stewart says they'll work, who the heck am I to argue?:) I say go for it. You know, it's just paint. If you hate it, you can repaint. I painted my bedroom three times in four months before I got a colour I love.:)

I have repainted my house many times (until I got it right!) and I think your plan sounds fine (although I don't know if I'd do a small space a darker color, either; with no natural light, it might look kinda dingy). The only thing you want to make sure you do is use either all cool-toned or all warm-toned colors, because the two don't mix well together. I have found that warm tones work best, and for interior work, to use an eggshell or a satin paint. BTW, if you are pulling your colors off the same palette, though, they were probably designed to work together and should look great.

My kitchen and dining room are mossy green and sand yellow (the yellow is very warm). My living room is a deep red with the sand yellow on one wall. That sounds like it wouldn't look that good, but it's very neutral and looks great together. The red, now, you either like or you hate! :)

Good luck! Post some pics when you're done!!
