Anyone here taking gymnastics classes?

Cathlete
Last week I signed up for the adult class. (Don't know if this is such a good idea but I'm one the list now!) The next session will start the first week of May! So I still have time to back out but it sounds like so much fun! My daughter really wants me to do it - she thinks it's a great idea!

So are there any other adults here that take or teach to other adults? What do you think? What should I watch out for? I really don't know what I want to ask so please just give your personal opinion about the matter?

Thanks so much!

Hi,
A gymnastics class sounds like alot of fun to me. You are being a great role model for your daughter. I have always wanted to take a dance class. Will this be your first gymnastics class? Or did you take gymnastics while you were growing up? I would love to hear more about it. Maybe your story can motivate me to take that dance class that I've always wanted to take but am too afraid to now at 35.

Lisa

Hi Lisa!

I'm 36 and have never taken gymnastics before! :) Let's pray I don't break something! :) I usually help my daughter, Ashley, practice on the weekends and I can do cartwheels and round offs just fine. Handstands are a little tough because I'm afraid I may flip over! I can't believe this because I used to do this stuff all the time! I know it's harder than it looks but I've always wanted to give it a try. So now's my chance!

You know, I've been wanting to take dance classes too! :):) So I did the next best thing for me - I picked up a couple of copies of MTV's The Grind videos. They're fun! I feel if I'm going to look silly at least it's in the privacy of my own basement! Some day I may venture out! I think I've finally convinced my husband to take a couples dance class. I think I'd like the Latin dance course! :) I'll keep you posted on this too!

This year I decided that I would try some new things, even some scary things. But mostly things that I feel I would enjoy! I didn't even know that this gym my daughter was attending held adult classes. But when I was registering her and giving her background info, some kind of way we got on the subject of school/cheerleading and how the cheerleaders get P.E. credits when they enroll at the gym. I guess she thought with Ashley's height she would try out for cheerleading next year! But anyway, she mentioned that the cheerleaders all meet on the same night as the adult classes AND that was my sign!

Hey Lisa! You know what you need to do? Just pull out the phone book and make the calls. :) Just check on the days/times for the classes you're interested in. More than likely, the class will be at a time that's inconvenient for you, so you'll probably let out a sigh of relief! :) LOL! Okay, you're off the hook for the moment but remember that summer's coming up and the schedules change a bit! You may find something that's at the perfect time, the perfect day. This will be the class for you! That's how it happened with me. :)

Hope you keep me posted! :)

Pfive,
I have been taking adult gymnastics classes once a week. And I take a dance class (jazz) every friday. It's great to try new things. I have learn how to do handstands which I think is pretty good for someone my age. All I can say is go for it and have a great time. PS, I am glad you are enjoying Cardio Kicks.

Ange

I think that sounds like so much fun. I've looked for stuff like that where I live. I did manage to find a beginner's class in ballet for adults. It was always the thing I wanted to do as a kid but never got the chance. We were the most graceless hippos but we all had such a good time, giggling at ourselves and each other! Go for it!

Now I feel so much better about having signed up! :) Thank you ladies!! :) :)

Ange, how long have you been taking classes? This is something I've always wanted to do....and ballet! Had a little taste of these growing up but never had the opportunity to take classes! :(

I guess one of the main reasons I posted this (outside of building up my courage :)) was to ask, are there any specific videos that are aiding you in your classes? For instance I have a couple of yoga tapes and I make sure that I do at least on of those videos each week! I have Yoga Zone Flexibility and Tone and Cardio Yoga. I really enjoy the Cardio Yoga because you move from pose to pose somewhat quickly. Any recommendations? Advice?

Thanks for the many responses! I tell you, I feel so much better about this now! :) You all are great!

Pfive,
I have only been taking the gymnastics classes for a short time. I did hire a private gymnastics coach to put together a workout for me. My main focus is on strength. Like you, I can do the back flips, splits and one hard cartwheels also. I like using Bryan Kest's Power yoga videos because he really challenges the muscles. I have been taking dance classes for almost 3 years and I just love it. I like Paula Abdul's Get Up and Dance more than I like the Grind series. I am happy to hear that you signed up for the class, and believe me you will not regret it.

Pfive,
I forgot to mention that I also use the balance ball a lot. It's great for toning and strengthing the abs and back.

Hi Ange!

I'll be sure to look into the Bryan Kest videos. I thought I saw a 3 pack set of videos by Bryan (I think) at our Wal-Mart! I'm going there tomorrow and will look for it!

And I'll be sure to check out the balance ball and videos. Maybe I'll look in Sports Authority for that, otherwise I'll have to place an order through Collage! You know, how big should that ball be? Is it based on your height? My mom saw a workout ball in the Target ad once but she wasn't sure what a person would do with it (she's not into fitness:() so no details for me. Guess I'll make a stop at Target too! :)

Thanks for the info!

RE: pfive

Although I don't take gymnastics classes - I could never even manage a cartwheel - I do take ballet classes. I can't believe how big a difference doing Pilates is making in my extensions. When I was younger, and taking ballet classes, I had terrible problems with extensions and am surprised, at 38, that they are better than ever. I would think that gymnasts would be helped greatly by Pilates, too, since it seems to require great core strength.

RE: pfive

Hi SharonH!

Which Pilates tape do you have or would recommend? I was looking through my Collage catalog over the weekend and saw that there are several to choose from! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!:)

Thanks,
Angie

RE: pfive

I have many Pilates and Pilates-inspired tapes, but Method Precision Toning is still my favorite. It is a tough tape to start out with, but Jennifer offers great instruction. If you want something from a different instructor, and a little bit less intense, a good Pilates-inspired tape is Karen Voight's Body Reform: Abdominals & Back. Happy shopping!

Hi Ange!

I'll 2nd. the Precision Toning tape. I just did it for the 1st. time this past week and really liked it. As Sharon said, Jennifer is a great instructor. She is very thorough and calm. I felt very good after the tape. There are some poses I will have to work on for balance, but I think they will come. Just wanted to share my experince with you.

RE: Hi Ange!

:) :) :)
Hi SharonH and DebbieH!

Thanks for the recommendations! I will be on the lookout for Precision Toning! Over the weekend I picked up 10 minute Solutions from the library! One of the segments was Pilates and Michelle looked absolutely wonderful and graceful. And the moves just flowed! I also enjoyed the ballet segment too! But the pilates truly grasped my attention!

I've seen Method tapes at my Target store- so this weekend I'm off shopping if I can't get it through a trade! I'll keep you posted!

Thanks again!
Angie

Hi Again!

Be sure to check WalMart and K-Mart if you have those stores too. I'm almost positive I saw it at both stores. Good Luck!
