Anyone have thyroid issues?

Hi guys. I went to my gyn today and found out I had only lost ONE POUND in the five months since giving birth. Lovely. I have been eating pretty clean, working out, etc., and I was very bummed. She said I"m showing classic symptoms of thyroid problems (I'm guessing hypothyroidism). I took a blood test to see, and will find out in a few days. So I may be jumping the gun asking, but does anyone else have thyroid issues? If so, when you started your meds, did you begin losing weight again? I've been so sad today thinking that I may be stuck at this weight, and I cannot fathom that. Also, did you have to change your diet once you found out? (I've read that hypothyroidism can lead to insulin resistance -- I think that's what I read -- and that some people have to drastically cut their carbs. I love my carbs. They are clean carbs.)

Any help/advice/words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have hypothyroidism but never realized it was impacting my weight. Since I didn't used to exercise and my eating was wildly out of control I actually think my thyroid was the least of my issues in regards to being fat.

These days, I take Levothyroxine every morning and have had zero problems losing weight that could seriously be attributed to my thyroid (pizza binge... hello). Sometimes, it takes a while for your doctor to figure out how many micrograms you should be on (I'm on 125mcgs) but, once that's done, you're on regular meds, and you're thyroid is functioning properly, it's as if you don't even have a problem. Get your diet under control, exercise, and you will have absolutely no problem losing weight. I did and my weight is steadily coming off. Hypothyroidism, once it's under control, is no obstacle to weight loss. So chill, chickybabes :p. It's going to be alright.

After the birth of our third child, I developed post-partum thyroiditis. During pregnancy, my thyroid was somehow damaged. After birth, the thryoid tried to correct itself and went hyperthyroid (not fun even though the weight came off; It was like an all-day anxiety attack) then hypothyroid, where it stayed. I ballooned up to 182 lbs. It took months before my body responded to the correct dosage of medication, which only meant that I stopped gaining weight. With my thyroid hormones at the correct levels, I thought the weight would "magically" burn off. Well, guess what? It didn't. I didn't feel THAT overweight because I was normally 135-140 lbs. It wasn't until I saw pictures of myself that I realized just how big I was. Since that day, almost seven years ago, I joined Weight Watchers and lost 40 lbs and kept it off.

I have no other health issues, I can eat carbs just fine. But I do watch my calories and work out almost every day.

One thing my endocrinologist said is that until my thryoid was regulated, it wouldn't matter how much exercise or dieting I did, I would not lose the weight.

Just know that having thyroid problems doesn't necessarily commit you to a lifetime of weight problems. You should, however, have your blood levels checked every six months or so just to make sure nothings changed. I'm on the generic version of Snythroid, Levothyroxine. There are no side effects but you do have to take it on an empty stomach for optimum effectiveness.

HTH - Good luck to you!

Thanks guys, this really helps so much! You've set my mind at ease! I may not even have a thyroid problem, but just reading about it today really freaked me out! Knowing you two are living with it and still able to lose weight normally (after proper med dosing), really makes me feel good. I'll find out later this week...

Thanks again!!
