Anyone had shoulder surgery?

I finally had my surgery a week ago - 6 months after the problem began and after trying everything else first! I have yet to get the full details from my doc, but he told my husband about cleaning out scar tissue, fraying, arthritis, bone fragments ... and sounds like the ball/socket was bone on bone so he had to put in a screw and suture a ligament to stabalize. Now I'm sporting this neato sling as the hottest spring fashion accessory - for the next 5+ weeks. Cathe - it'll be some time until I hit the floor to do some straight leg push ups w/ you :) Anyway, just wondering if anyone out there had been through it and how recovery went. It's going to be HARD getting back into the routine once it's time.

Hi Jen,

I had shoulder surgery in '06 to re-attach my supraspinatus rotator cuff which had completely tore off the bone. I was in a sling for weeks and immediately started using a mechanical chair that would raise and lower my arm at various angles. I used the chair for about 2 months, attended physical therapy for 6 months and performed my daily exercises. I wasn't allowed to start lifting until after 6 months, starting with a tuna can and working up from there. It took about a year before I was back to my pre-injury strength but now 3 1/2 years later, I am lifting even heavier, doing all "toe" pushups, pullups etc.. so you can come back from this! The only issue I still have is the scar tissue sometimes gets pinched or caught and I have some "crunchiness" going on.

My advice: Stay committed to your physical therapy and do all your exercises. Also, don't try to do too much too quickly.

Good luck with your recovery:)

Yes I had shoulder surgery from a tennis injury which didn't heal properly. They tried to do it laproscopically but there was too much damage so cut it open. Cleaned out all the arthritis and then had to cut my collarbone because my shoulder and it were bone on bone. It was a little over 6 months when I could kind of play golf again, you'll know if it is too soon, it will hurt. After the first try, I did wait a few weeks to let it heal longer. Do the rehab exercises they will give you. It really was a great thing to have done because I have no problems and it has been 6 years I believe. Good luck!
