I have a modest fruit and berry patch. I grow currants, blueberries, red raspberries and attempt to grow grapes. If anyone has had success growing grapes in a home garden I could use some help. The vines produce grapes however they never fully ripen. I've read many books on this subject but have not found any information that has been helpful. If location factors I am in the Hudson Valley area of NY. Ideas anyone?

We are working on putting in our first garden at this very moment (ok, I'm not). I don't think we're going to grow grapes, but I have many friends with experience that I will pose your question to, and if I get any good info I'll report back here.

Do you know what type of grapes you are growing? If you know and are sure that they are appropriate for your area (and that they have proper sun), I would start with a soil test and see if you can figure out what is making them unhappy.

Grapes are tough but there is probably something specific they are missing (or getting too much of). Any neighbors with grapes that might have some insight?

If all else fails you might look into a variety that is easier to grow in your area. Good luck!

Contact your local county extension agency. Cooperative Extension in NY is run out of Cornell so google your county and "cooperative extension" and a site similar to this one http://counties.cce.cornell.edu/oneida/ should show up. Your local extension agents are the best resource for determining proper varieties for your area as well as cultural and production problems.

Good luck,

I can't remember what variety of grapes we planted. It was a while ago. I did do research at the time and I know they are appropriate for our area. I will look into a soil/nutrient problem. We do have a co operative extension close to us also. I never would have thought of that. Thanks everyone for your ideas.

Hi there - We're doing more this year with growing our own fruits and berries. I've just ordered a bunch of fruit trees, raspberry plants, and strawberries. I'm also in the Northeast (VT) so I've been perusing lots of web sites for info.

ITA with contacting your extension agency. Also, there is a very reputable nursery in your area that may have info.

St. Lawrence Nurseries - http://www.sln.potsdam.ny.us/

I ordered most of my stuff from these guys, and they have a lot of info on their site about planting/care/etc. They're in Maine:

Fedco Seeds - http://www.fedcoseeds.com/

Lastly, the Fruits & Orchards forum over at GardenWeb usually has a knowledgable brain to pick: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/fruit/

Good luck with your grapes!

I just have one black raspberry bush that I planted (give me a big handful of berries every other day for a few weeks) and some wild raspberries that grow around my property.
