We are going to be renting initially, but are looking at the Northern Palm Beach area, Port St. Lucie, and Martin county areas to build a house. There is also a place in St. Lucie county called "Tradition" that that we are looking at also. I know very little about these areas so it'll be interesting once we move to see what the opportunities are for nurses!!
Thanks!
:)

I'm pretty sure there are TONS of opportunities for nurses. I've been looking for a job a little south of that area for several months, and visited a few health care websites to see if there were any communications jobs. Nope, they were all for nurses. If I still have the links to those sites I'll send them to you. Otherwise I can send some good links to job opportunities in South Florida.

When are you planning to move?

RE: Anyone from Southeast Florida?(Palm Beach, Port St....

My husband starts his new job on the 27th of this month(eekkk!!, not a lot of notice to move, eh?)
That would be great if you still have the sites!!
It's such a short time period that I'll look for a job once I get down there, it's hard to have enough time to do sufficient research on the job prospects down there AND move.
Thanks for your help!!

I live on the East coast, but I am sure there are tons of opportunities for nurses. TONS. :) It is so beautiful on the West Coast, I am sure you will be happy there.

WOW! I'd be panicked!! Good luck with the move!

Here's the best link I found yet for all things Florida:

http://www.myflorida.com/portal

And the jobs page is (found under "Floridians"):

http://taxonomy.myflorida.com/Taxonomy/Floridian/Working in Florida

This one is pretty good too:

http://www.job-hunt.org/jobs/florida.shtml

And I bet you could use this one (actually just stumbled on it now):

And this one:

I have others at the office more specific to S. Florida. I'll send those tomorrow a.m.

Hi! You'll be living in my neck of the woods! I live in Fort Pierce, which is the next city north of Port St. Lucie. I've lived here since October. Unfortunately, I don't know for sure about the opportunities for nurses, but I do know of a few hospitals in the area - Martin Memorial, Lawnwood Regional, and St. Lucie Medical Center. Good luck in your search!

This is the retirement capital of the USA. You will have no problem finding a job. You name your hours, etc. You will be hired on the spot. Probably with sign on bonuses to boot. Don't worry, you will find a job.

Well....my current job actually is very interesting and rewarding. I work for a nonprofit that distributes a drug donated by Merck for people with parasitic diseases that cause blindness and elephantiasis. The pharmaceutical industry is becoming increasingly generous with drugs that aren't accessible to people in developing countries, which is very uplifting.

But...my BF and I want to start a nonprofit in S. Florida related to our website (www.marinebio.org) to educate people on marine biology and raise awareness about the need for conservation. Until we get funded, I'm planning to find a job in S. Florida so that we can move there and finally live in the same city (he's in Houston, I'm in Atlanta).

I'm finding the job-search process a pain in the glutes...There are probably plenty of jobs out there, I just haven't done this in a long time (14 years!) and it's intimidating!

That's why I have nurse envy right now - I'd love to be able to name my conditions and have them begging on their knees!

Joni, that is a beautiful website! Absolutely beautiful!!!

I don't think you will have a problem with your dreams of starting a non-profit. :) :)

My kids and I go here a lot, it's in our town. Mostly helps birds and sea turtles.

And Joni, don't have nurse envy, it has a high burnout rate. It looks like you are doing what you love. Your job with Merck sounds very rewarding. Is this parasitic organism in the water? In insects? What countries do you serve?

THANK YOU!! :D

We're very proud of it.

You just gave me the "guts" to call and find out the status of a funding/sponsorship proposal we submitted back in March. They were supposed to follow up with us in May, but we haven't heard anything. I've been afraid to call - no news is good news right? Well, enough is enough!

Naturally our contact there didn't answer her phone - she never does, even though she's supposed to be the "go to" person there. Nor does she answer emails with questions. Grrrr.... unfortunately since she's the "gatekeeper" so I have to be nice :p

Thanks again! I'm adding your Marine Science Center to our conservation orgs page - sounds like a great place!

THANK YOU ALL FOR THIS INFO!!!!
That's my big fear--sign on bonuses are a red flag to me.(is it the nursing shortage or are there other "issues" why the staff keep leaving?)
I've been used to M-F for the last 4 years in the GI lab(with no call--call $$ is nice, but if you're too tired to spend it, what fun is that?)
I was on the O. R. transplant team before the position that I have now, a VERY rewarding team to be on, but at the ripe age of 41 I'm enjoying working 5 days a week with no call--more time for DH and I to do stuff.
I'm just trying to go down to South Florida with an open mind and I guess be a little choosey(sp?), I don't want to be job "hopping" to find one that I like--it's hard when you aren't familiar with the area.
I'm going on the Cathe trip before I make the move to S. Florida--how's that for dedication?(and probably my last vacation for awhile)LOL As good as the real estate market is in Florida we won't be closed on this house until sometime in July anyway--hopefully no hurricanes will come and extend the date!!
Thanks again for this information!!

Mary, I think you can be very picky. I misunderstood the initial question, and thought you said the West coast. I had New Pt. Richey on the brain. Anyhow, Port St. Lucie area is beautiful also. Very new, and growing like mad.

I am sure you can be extremely choosey with your background. There is a lot of competition for nurses, at least in my area. I think that is the reason for sign on bonuses.

Good luck.
