Anyone from/live in Reno?

Hi fellow fitness fans. (As a non-traditional student)I just graduated from college and really want to relocate to Reno, I just loved it last year when I visited. I am having trouble trying to land a job out there. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on where to look or how to relocate cross-country? I've tried all the typical career web sites, but to no avail. Thanks in advance for your advice!! :)

Hey Lori,

I don't live in Reno, but Elko. It's about a 4 hour drive (which in Nevada, isn't far :D ) I also have a gazillion friends who live or have lived in Reno for college. If I were you, just to get a shoe in, I would start with any and all of the casinos. It might not be at all the job you want, but they seem to always be hiring for something. Another place to start would be a mall. I have a couple of acquaintences who work at the Meadowood (I think it is) and have for a few years - the pay is decent, and it should work just long enough to find what you want/need.

As far as where to live, I would make the transition in the very early summer. College students are leaving for the summer and good deals might be easier to come by. Early fall (August, September) is the worst. I tried that once when I thought I was going to UNR for school - bad idea.

I don't think I can offer much information beyond that. I haven't talked to my friends in awhile to know how the prices are and stuff.

I have no input, just wanted to say "Hi!" as a fellow Nevadan (Amargosa Valley). It's neat to think there is someone in Elko that is a Cathe fan! Hey, you might even know some people I know:)

Hi Lori, I don't live in Reno, but I have in the past AND I do live in Truckee which is just up the hill. I do know it is one of the fasted growing cities in the country, outpacing even Phoenix and Las Vegas. There has to be job opportunities, and housing is still affordable but climbing quickly. I guess it depends on what you do for a living, though it is way more family friendly than you'd imagine being a big gaming city. Not to mention all the ski areas, and resort type things in Tahoe. What are your plans for an occupation?
 
One thing to keep......

in mind Lori is cost of living. I saw this post and researched Reno a bit. I was shocked to learn that I would need to make $5,000 additional per year to live at the same standard of living as I am doing right now here in Arnold, Maryland. I mean, this area is pretty affluent and pretty expensive to live in as it is. So that surprised me a bit. Just something to keep in mind.....

Thanks for your replies. Dani, I am in entry level management/admin & accounting support right now. I just graduated Magna Cum Laude with a liberal arts degree, but am pretty flexible as to what I can do. I've held steady full time employment for the last ten years, so hopefully someone will hire me. Its tough trying to land something from afar, let me tell you! Trevor-thanks for you input too. I've checked out apartments, etc. and I know I can afford it. I pay very high rent now, even though I live in such a small town (supply/demand I guess.) I'm just afraid to pick up and leave without a game plan..(i.e. job). Ah, what to do!

It is so funny to me what is expensive anymore. I live in a very high cost area, and I guess I am so used to it that Reno seems affordable. I do the majority of all shopping there, from food and clothing to gasoline. Fortunately we live close enough that I can:)

I assume that it is all relative. I could be wrong, and maybe I am just used to living very simply to be able to live here and raise my family in such an amazing place.

Anywhere you can still get a house for less than 400,000.00 seems cheap. So sad!

I would think that you could find a job just about anywhere. My cousin works for the Silver Legacy and I know there is a whole other side to the casino's than just slot machines.

There are job fairs quite often too.

I would think that you might target places specifically, and submit resumes accordingly. You might even plan a trip to really scout this out. I just know with the boom in growth, you could go anywhere and do just about anything but you are right to have some plan first.

I will keep my ears open, and if I hear of anything I will let you know:)

Thanks again for your input. I'm actually going out to visit on April 7-8 and plan to visit several of the casinos employment offices and maybe even some employment agencies. Hopefully someone can match me up with something. I'm just ready for a change and need to move on. I've been doing research and watching all kinds of sites, etc. for opportunities, because all it takes is the right one. Hope to be your "neighbor" soon!

Alot of homes nowadays are cheap....cheaply built that is, and overpriced. $200,000 here gets you a crummy townhome. Nowadays you have appraisers in bed with banks and stuff similar to that going on so it's no surprise housing has gone up and combine that with demand and you have what you have nowadays.

Trevor, I hear that! It seems like a lot of cost depends on construction labor costs. I noticed it was much cheaper to buy a home in Texas, maybe its a land availability thing. Who knows.

Dani-I guess I'm doing something right-I've managed to get 3 interviews scheduled so far. One is in Carson City, how far is that from Reno? Can't wait to get out there....

Carson City is just south of Reno, I would say about 30-45 minutes....depending on traffic. Just a bit south of Carson is Minden and Gardnerville. Very pretty there, but I have no idea the work options. I just love the community, it's a smaller valley ranching area, and it sets right at the base of the Sierras. Quite striking views!

Also don't forget Tahoe:) I love it here, born and raised. I did move away for college, but once we had kids I needed to get back to my mountains:D Lot's of opportunities in the ski resorts and other things. I have not looked at this site, but I just heard about it recently. Check out www.truckee.com

Congratulations on the interviews!

I will only add that the quality of living is worth it for our family. We have friends who visit us from a couple of different areas and laugh at housing costs here. We were blessed to get in to a home before prices went insane, but regardless, they will still mention the quality of living that we enjoy far surpasses where they live, and to me that means everything! One more site is www.skinorthstar.com They have a live web cam, but also under "the mountain", they list employment. I don't know what is there, but it may be worth looking at Northstar and other resorts. Many of them are year round with skiing and summer activities. Just another thought..........

Thanks, I will check them out. I can't wait to move. I've been looking at apartments for now, until we can decide on (and afford )a house. Now, I just have to get my husband a job....

I lived in Gardnerville for 2 yrs and Stateline just up over the mountain from there for a year. It was the best place I have ever lived for quality of life. Carson is nice because it's smaller and more relaxed than Reno, and Reno and the Lake are still very close if you need a big store, the airport, whatever. And Carson City is the state capitol, so sometimes that comes in handy too.

Minden/Gardnerville would be my first choice, then Carson, then Reno, then the lake basin itself. And do check out Virginia City and Smith Valley once you have the time. What a wonderful area.
 
My parents moved to Reno my senior year of high school. It is a great small town with lots of fun things to do. I loved the weather, just loved it. We had our home in the south west part of town.

Have you checked out Sparks? You might find a little more affordable housing there or even just a place to hang your hat while you get situated.

Carson is great. I worked as a key girl at the Peppermill hotel/casino after graduation. That was an education all on it's own!! I'll bet you ten bucks that my old supervisor is still there.

You could even find roomates up at UNR for temporary housing. ( I went there freshman year).

One other place to look. There is a lot of housing in the Plumb Lane/ Plumas area/ Virginia Lake. Not sure what kind of shape it is in now. I thought they were condo's/ townhouses and apartments.
