Anyone familiar with Marilu Henner's Nutrition Plan?

I talked to a co-worker recently who had success with this program...it's called the Total Health Makeover and is based on Henner's book.

It seems to be a sort of detox program for your body that incorporates many aspects of nutrition including cutting out red meat, dairy, caffeine, and refined sugars. It also goes into food combining. From my understanding, you can incorporate one or all of these steps at a time.

It sounds kind of restrictive to me but the "detox your diet" aspect of it was interesting. Just wanted to get some opinions from this "educated crowd"

Yup....

Her eating plan is very similiar to the nutritional counseling I had by my Naturopathic pyhsican a few years ago.

I don't abide by it 100%..mostly due to old habits die hard...but all in all..it works for me. I had problems with sleep, weight, motivation, allergies...you name it but if I eat properly..which is close to the Marilu way
wink.gif
...my body responds better.

One freaky thing I noticed with the food combining is, if I combine starchy carbs with protein..I can count on not sleeping through the night. I will be wide awake at 2-3 for hours. If I skip the spud and just have veggies and protein..I sleep like a baby.

As far as the other stuff..I don't digest dairy, the books will tell you..it was designed for baby cows hehehe..and besides not having stomach problems by cutting it out..I also don't have anymore mucus in my throat..something I never noticed till I cut it out of my diet...and this body was made on milk
wink.gif
. You will never see me cut out red meat..cause I like it
wink.gif
..but I do eat it in moderation. And the big..really bad thing I try to focus all my dietary attention on..is Sugar. That, no doubt is a big factor in my mental state..over sugar indulgences just make me blue and unhappy
sad.gif
..it acts like an addiction.

I wish I could stick to it more...it is basically eating whole healthy foods(foods that contain only one ingredient)..at least that is what I got out of it...I haven't cracked the book in an age
wink.gif
.

Now that you have my 2 cents..let me add another penny..find what works for you and keep in mind moderation...'cause you can bet I don't skip ice cream..despite the dairy and sugar
wink.gif
. I figure, not everyone is 100% right all the time..and you got to live a little.

One funny thing both my Doc and Marilu focus on for a true sign of a healthy diet is the elimination factor. So if you give her diet a try..you'll just be a regular gal

Thanks Nancy!

Glad to hear your thoughts on this plan. For me too the only part of the program that would be a real struggle is getting rid of refined sugars...I too, feel like it is an addiction at times. If I don't have some kind of sweets most days I get kind of edgy...even my husband has noticed it. So anyway, for me I may just try the other steps. The food combining sounds like it's definitely worth a try because I rarely sleep soundly through the night and now that I think about it, it may be from what she would call "improper food combining" (or too many late night treats

).

And you're right -- being "regular" never hurt anyone either
