Anyone else with thyroid issues?

Hi all,
My thyroid is all over the place after having my son 6 months ago. Originally, I went to hyper thryoid (too much), and after the last batch of testing yesterday, I'm now extremely hypo thyroid (too little).

Anyone else dealt with this? They're going to put my on Synthroid and try to treat it before sending me to an endocrinologist.
Just wondering what I'm in for. So far, I don't have any symptoms that I recognize. I'm concerned about weight gain more than anything, but my understanding is that the drug basically resolves that issue.

Just curious is anyone else has been there?

similar situation here

I had my doctor send me to an endicronologist because she noticed my thyroid was enlarged after having my first baby, and her bloodtests didn't show up anything.

The endicronologist put me no synthroid as well, to shrink the thyroid. His theory was that I was not producing enough and the thyroid was trying to compensate by getting bigger to produce more.

My thyroid shrunk back to normal once on the synthroid. I had no negative side effects.

A little later on I started seeing a chiropractor regularly and found out that one of the adjustments she does adjust what affects the thyroid function.
I asked her if that could possibly mean my thryroid might do well on its own again.

She supervised me very gradually getting off synthroid. I have been off synthroid completely for two and a half months and my numbers are normal.

Maybe that's something you can look into once the meds help balance your thyroid activity?

Hope that helped.

I've been on synthroid for years and have a pretty enlarged thyroid -- I'm intrigued by the chiropractor treatments! -- in my experience, you will feel a whole lot better than you have been feeling in about a month. It may take a little while for them to figure out the correct dose. Good luck,

I've been on synthroid since 1989. I have Hypo and a goiter, which means it feels like I have a turtleneck sweater on too tight. The synthroid helps the goiter some but they cannot give me enough to make it totally shrink because too much effects my heart.

Synthroid is easy to take and works well to get your thryroid working. It just takes a few months on each dose before they know if it's working. So be patient.

We have been working to get and keep my thyroid balanced for about ten years now. Right now, I'm doing great, but it has been a long hard road. One of the problems is that my body doesn't respond like most people's. Because of my long history of yo-yo dieting, my body is easily thrown into "starvation mode." When that happens, my weight starts to go up (and up and up -- and fast!), even if my thyroid numbers look beautiful. It took a couple of specialists before I finally found a good one who worked with me to figure this out (instead of telling me to eat less and exercise more, which I was already doing -- much to my frustration).

Most people have very good luck with their thyroid treatment and get right back to normal with just a pill to regulate them. But if you don't feel right after treatment, don't let them tell you it's all in your head. Start insisting on trying different types of treatment immediately. There are MANY (not just one, as so many doctors will try to tell you).

I developed thyroid disease after giving birth to my son as well. I am hypothyroid and take synthroid. I have been doing that for 16 years!

Hypothyroidism

I've had hypothyroidism for 37 years! I've been on Synthroid since then and for the rest of my life! I'm very, very athletic and have a high metabolism. No problems with weight either.

I just found out that I have an enlarged thyroid. My test results were all within the normal range. Thankfully the endocrinologist ordered an ultrasound on my thyroid. It is not huge, but it is larger than what they consider normal and I have small nodules on it.

I have a history of thyroid disease on bothe sides of my family: mother and grandmother. So the doctor has prescribed Levoxyl to stop the growth of the thyroid. It is a very low dose and I go back in 3 months to see how things are going.

I know what the other people mean when they say they were frustrated with diet and exercise not working. I have accepted myself, but that does not mean I have given up on my goals! I am hoping this medication helps.

Good luck with your treatment.

OK thanks everybody!
I just picked up my script for Levothyroxine at .075mg. I hope this doe the trick.
I've been without symptoms so far (as far as I recognize). I've been tired for a long time, but I've always attributed this to my little guy and figured this is what I'll feel like!
Hopefully this is something that starts to feel better.

Thanks for all of your notes.
I'm also intrigued by the chiro part. I see both a chiro and a napropath for "mommy back". My back feels MUCH better with both of them, but I had no idea that thryoid could be affected.
Hmmm!

I became hypothyroid after my DD was born 8 years ago. It's not a big deal. You'll feel much better once you're on the synthroid. I get it checked every 6 months and sometimes adjustments are necessary. I had a nasty bout with insomnia last March - June, which may have been due to an over medication that made me hyperthyroid. It's something you will have for the rest of your life, but easily maintained.

You may think you don't have symptoms, but give the synthroid awhile to kick in, and you'll realize that you did. I was depressed and didn't know until I wasn't anymore. I forgot what being happy felt like.
