I was there 2 yrs ago. If you are staying by the water, you might want to consider the Isla Verde area. It's a strip of hotels, many very expensive. I opted for the Marriott Courtyard which is at the end of the strip close to the airport. The only down side was that it's right on the path of the planes coming in and out. They did not interfere with sleeping at all. It didn't really bother me and the price was right. Wonderful beach, not crowded, nice pool area and outside bar/grill. Wonderful breakfast in the am. included with room price. I loved it - smaller than the other hotels and not pretentious. If you opt for the Old San Juan area, there are nice hotels in that area as well. If you do stay in a hotel on Isla Verde, know that you can get to Old San Juan for a quarter on the bus. Cabs are very expensive. The bus takes a while but it's interesting to be among the locals. It's people watching at it best. Also the rainforest tour is good. Picks you up at your hotel. Check "Trip Advisors" for more reviews of areas in Puerto Rico.

I am from Puerto Rico. I agree that you will like El Conquistador. I suggest you take one of those guided tours so you can go to all the places most of us puertorricans are not even aware of! The traffic is terrible in the metropolitan area (San Juan, Bayamón ...) I am from Bayamon. You must visit San Juan and Ponce. Guayama is also very beautiful. For beaches, I recommend Boqueron, which is in Cabo Rojo. I know, I have you all confused, but don't worry, PR is quite small, the farthest it can take you from one point to another is four hours, counting all the turns. The key is making a plan for each day.

Ditto on the suggestion to visit San Juan and Ponce. Both are beautiful, but totally different. My Dad grew up in San Juan and went to college in Ponce - se when we visited PR, of course we went to both places. :) Luquillo Beach is wonderful for sitting under palm trees and enjoying the scenery, as well as swimming in the water. El Yunque rainforest is a wonderful place to visit and see beautiful tropical birds and trees and whatnot. The views from the mountains are gorgeous! And of course you have to visit Old San Juan! I also enjoyed visiting the Arecibo Radio Telescope Observatory, but that's because I'm an astronomy geek. ;) Hacienda Buena Vista (a coffee plantation) was a very neat tour too. There are so many neat things to do in PR - I loved it there so much! :) Here is a great website to help you make your plans:

You guys LOL! Anyone also from Puerto Rico? I LIVE in Puerto Rico (born and raised here.)

Jes, there are a lot of places and things to do here. El Conquistador (absolutely awesome) that is in the east of the island, the Isla Verde and Condado area is in the north, very posh and can get expensive too, if you've been to South Beach, Fl it's kinda like that. But you have a lot of places to go during the day and the night life is awesome too and Old San Juan is a couple of minutes away. Ponce is in the south and it's our second San Juan of sorts. It's also gorgeous and has a lot of historic places you can visit. Isabela (northwest of the island), Cabo Rojo (southwest of the island) and Luquillo (north of the island) as previously suggested, have stunning beaches. Depends on where you actually go, but there are places in Cabo Rojo (and Luquillo) where you can wake up early in the morning and the water is so clear you can see fish and octupuses (octopi) and shrimp and all the sealife around you and you don't have to go deep into the water to see them; if you like snorkeling those are great. If you would like to visit our rainforest go to El Yunque, if you like astronomy go to Arecibo, we have a really posh resort called Palmas del Mar in Humacao (southeast of the island), or you can take a boat or plane and go to our mini paradise island called Culebra. If you go to El Conquistador you can ask for information on how to visit Culebra island. Oh my gosh I could go on and on. I would say that if you're coming to visit, first you have to know what you prefer, if you love the beach and water sports, if you love to dance, if you're into art and history, if you're into science, etc. and make a plan of places to visit around those (of course if you're bugdet conscious you have to take that into account too, some places are more expensive than others.) I can guarantee there is a place to visit for any taste or lifestyle over here :). When you know where you'll be staying let me know and I can give you more suggestions.
