Any knitters in the house?

I'm a knitting junkie and was wondering if any you who knit know of any good knitting websites. Especially the type with free patterns! I love www.knitty.com! They even have instructions for knitting your own exciting underwear! (I'm not kidding. They really, really do!)

I so wish I could knit. I've tried. I find it very relaxing. But nothing will ever come of my knitting. I envy you so. I could knit precious little hats for Limecat. Maybe even sweaters. I think he'd like that.

You're so funny. Visit me in Virginia and I'll show you how. My wonderful cat is the happy owner of a hand knit wonton and eggroll set of toys. (Stuffed with catnip, of course.)

Oh my! I would come to visit JUST to see a hand knitted wonton and egg roll set. That would be quite something!

Limecat is, unfortunately, currently undergoing a 12 step program for his catnip addiction. It's a sad day indeed when you find the cat out in the street, with a little sign reading "Will wear a lime on my head for catnip". So sad.

Ah, Shelley. You may be onto something there. Perhaps I can knit a smart-looking briefcase as well. And since I'll be working in D.C., I'll need to knit lots and lots of money....does that count as counterfeiting?

This thread is hilarious! Y'all crack me up! :)

I don't knit, but I do crochet. Although, it's been a long time since I've actually made anything. I started an afghan for DH, but haven't finished it yet. I think I started it about a year and a half ago... LOL!

I could crochet some toys for my cats. I like the eggroll and wonton idea - very cute! Maybe I'll go for a different culture - tacos and enchiladas. Or manicotti and ravioli.

Man, I'm making myself hungry. With food made out of YARN!

I knit but lately haven't produced anything more exciting than baby booties/baby blankets (shower gifts) and scarves (for me). Before I rediscovered the sewing machine in the last couple years I used to make sweaters, hats, and even socks on occasion. I can't believe they have underwear patterns! Too funny. I've been knitting since I was 6. It's nice to see that it's back in fashion again. The new yarns they have now are fabulous.

Emily- I would love to learn how to crochet. I've been knitting for about 9 years, but for some reason, I can't get a crochet hook to work for me. I am however thinking of knitting little sushi rolls for my cat. Perhaps, I could knit them with chopsticks!

TK- I'm happy about the knitting comeback as well. It's becoming fairly popular among the 20-somethings. Now people don't ask me if I'm making a shawl when they see me knitting! The yarns are pretty great, I just can't believe how expensive they are. I'm making an aran afghan for my SO and the wool was $116 (he paid for it :D)

Here's a direct link to the underwear patterns in case you wanted a peek!

Shelley- OMG, you're killing me here.

I've been knitting over 20 years, and as a result, I've accumulated quite a supply of knitting magazines. I think I have all the Vogue Knitting issues back to 1984. That's where I usually go to find a pattern. I have found a few patterns on www.freepatterns.com, when I didn't have just the right pattern here at home. Any of you knitters have little kids? When my kids were in preschool, I started knitting them each a sweater for their school pictures every year. It's a great way to document your knitting, and you'll always have the photos as mementos. Just an idea.

Hi Lynda-

I get knitting magazines on occassion but it always seems like there's only one pattern in each that I like enough to invest the time and money. I'll definitely check out the free patterns site. Thank you for posting it.

I don't have kids and 90% of what I knit I give away without photographing first. It's a shame. When I started out, everything was in stockinette stitch and had no shaping or detail whatsoever. Over the years, I've looked for increasingly difficult patterns and now I figure if it doesn't have cables in the pattern, I pretty much don't want to do it! :)

Do you have anything in particular you like to knit now that your kids are growing up?

RE: P.S. for Shelley

I still love to knit for my kids. They're 7 and 9, and I usually make them each an aran sweater for their school pictures. I spend some time designing it by adapting an old pattern that I have. I like to try interesting cables and textures. I HATE changing colors, so it's almost always solid. I'm actually working on an aran fisherman sweater for myself. I don't have a single thing that I've knitted for myself. My husband and kids have plenty, so I thought it was time to do one for me. I also just knit a mohair wrap for my mother to go with a periwinkle dress she was wearing to a wedding. I trimmed the ends with a fringe of sheer ribbon strips. It came out really nice.

Lunacat - is it coincidence that the licorice undies and the knitted devil hat MATCH? I'm sensing an outfit here.;)

RE: P.S. for Shelley

I love to knit, though I'm relatively new to it (only about 4 years). Right now I'm in the middle of making a cardigan (http://www.theyarnco.com/knit_display/273#) (making it in pink). It's taking me forever, though, cause the time that I used to spend after work knitting I now devote mainly to Cathe! Good thing, too, probably, because I can easily spend a small fortune on yarn.

I like the knitty.com site the best out of the ones I've looked at--they have the nicest patterns, IMHO. I also drool over Rowan Yarn's patterns--http://www.knitrowan.com/html/home.asp --they have their catalogs in my local yarn store, but I've never made any of their stuff.
