send all the suggestions you like.. i will do them.

I used to teach a water fitness class ... i did it in the deep end without a belt .. i just used my zoomers with straight legs to keep myself up ... what a great workout that is by itself! ......Love those zoomers!

do you ever use them?
i used to get them from stanford university where they were developed for the swim team ..but i think they are available in stores now.

I love those little webbed mitts too ...

i took some of those mitts to the carribean recently and just stayed in the ocean hours at a time.

Are there any comfortable webb mitts last a long time in chlorine?
i make mine myself..but would buy some if they didnt fall apart so quickly.

Hi, Cinza! My favorite brand/style of resistance mitts is put out by Speedo - it has a thick yellow neoprene upper, and some sort of durable palm that feels a tad rubbery on the outside but is neoprene covered on the inside. That has been the most durable, and the most effective resistance-wise, of mitts for me. They do wear out over time, but I'm not fond of Wave-Web Pros or similar mitts that are very thin (not much resistance) or the totally rubber kind (you don't get much drag resistance with those because there's no cloth). You can get them online thru a variety of websites, Speedo's website included.

I have no idea what "zoomers" are. Are they ankle resistance or buoyancy devices? Any info would be appreciated.

You may enjoy investing in some styrofoam hand-buoys; they look like bit outsized dumbbells, and can be used as a float device (much like a kickboard) for flutter-kick drills, long-lever deep water leg drills, supine abdominal work (make sure to keep the buoys near your legs in front rather than at your sides so that you don't stress out the shoulders), AND for upper-body resistance work in the shallow end of the pool, in an anchored, standing position. Hand buoys are made by several manufacturers, most prominently Hydro-fit, which makes them in 2 varieties of resistance. There's a mega-resistance hand-buoy with double disks AND a padded grip sold by Fitness Wholesale (www.fwonline), brand name Challenge Pro - that's the kind I use. Hydrofit also has a video and laminated exercise sheet for the hand buoys. That's about the only real equipment I use for myself and/or my classes in addition to resistance mitts - frankly, I think a lot of aquatic equipment looks stupid (noodles), is of limited value and versatility, and sometimes is a lot less safe than its benefits justify.

Lemme know if this helps!

Zoomers are slip on fins ..... much shorter though... about 4 inches past the toes...
http://www.zoomers.net/zoomers.htm
they were developed for competition swimmers to make strenght gains...
I am the only person who uses them in an upright postion instead of swimming.
. they work much better for me than any boyancy stuff ....they make the leg longer if you are in an upright position and put all the torque down past the toes ... which makes for more work.

THanks for all your suggestions... I will look up the speedo gloves right now!

Fishing for ideas too

A friend broke both elbows last week while he was running with my husband. One's bad, the other is really bad & requires surgery. I know he's going to go stir crazy once the pain subsides & I suggested pool running. He loved the idea but I haven't a clue about water workouts & would love some ideas to pass on.

Presumably he'll be able to rig up something to keep his cast/or splint dry. He'll need to avoid resistance against his arms (at least for awhile). Right now lifting a half full glass with his "good" arm is his limit. He has back problems & won't be able to do his usually ab/lower back routine. Ideas? Resources?

Thanks so much.

RE: To Debra

Try the Aquatic Exercise Association website (www.aeawave.com), and see if there are any videos for training out of an injury. In all honesty, I'm not sure what would be appropriate for someone with shattered elbows - avoiding resistance may be only one thing, avoiding the jarring of ANY impact may be another. Sorry I don't have any ideas.

Maybe deep-water aquajogging with an Aquajogger float belt if absolutely no impact is indicated. Or power water walking, with big strides, in the shallow end, continually going back and forth against the currents the walker has created.

Ouch! That sounds like one painful set of injuries! Wish him our best . . .

Thank you Annette

Thanks for the website & ideas. I think he's going to have to experiment to figure out where to place his arms. His range of motion should get better in the next few weeks so maybe he can just let his arms float on the surface while he "runs".
