An Observation on Litterbugs...

Based on what I end up picking up on my road and in the parking lot at work, it appears that they all eat at McDonald's and drink really low quality beer. x(

For about six years I lived on a big lake in a resort area. I was on the BOD of an organization that dealt with environmental issues among other things, and one of the things we did was highway cleanup. Very enlightening. Gross, but enlightening.

Not where I live. I get the cheap beer cans but it appears Starbuck's & Dunkin Donuts are doing quite a business. And the ATM across the street generates a plethora of unwanted reciepts.

BTW this is all in my front yard b/c I live in the downtown. I hate the fact that I have to clean up other people's garbage, especially when it's food related. EWWWW!

Ugh I can not stand litterbugs. The worst is when I see someone throw a cig out the window of their car. There is a ash tray in the car for a reason. x(

Jacque, In our cleanup endeavor, we found lots of cigarette butts, but we also found that at the stoplights in town people actually emptied their ash trays on the side of the road--there were just big piles of them. We also found dirty diapers and more than any other item, we found Wal-Mart plastic bags. Hundreds of them.

This is a topic that really burns me up. I remember once at a red light the person behind me just rolled down there window and threw two WHOLE banana peels on the ground. I just can't believe how people can be so cavalier about littering! Don't they realize they are breaking the law. UGH!x( x(

Litterbugs (aka Littersnoids) would also be executed if I ran the country, especially the cigarette dumping types who feel compelled to share their habit with the world

I'm with ya, it's so frustrating to have to walk up and down my street picking up garbage. And yeah, McD's and big beer bottles are always a part of it. My teenagers just don't understand why I bother, and I try explaining, but explain anything to teenagers and you'll always end up talking to yourselfx( I say someday you'll understand. Where's the eco-club for teens when you need them.

I've seen people throw straw wrappers out of windows when they're at a drive-up window....and there's a garbage can just 5 feet ahead, waiting at the exit.

I used to go walking in a small park with a friend of mine, and you wouldn't believe the crap people just throw on the ground. Once, someone obviously gave someone else a gift (awww...how nice) because the paper, ribbon, box and styrofoam from whatever the gift was were strewn around.

When the school year started, several houses of student rentals had beer glasses and other crap on their front lawns for weeks. I called the police, but they wanted exact addresses, and obviously my "the first 4 or 5 houses on the street" didn't interest them, because the cups were still there. And I even saw some ($@#&$@ guys playing 'catch' in their front yard, with 2-3 cups within their reach, and a garbage can set out for pick-up, but they couldn't move their lazy @$$&$ to pick them up!

Well, I think I've got all of you beat.

I live in a very rural area. People dump loads of trash, including used furniture and appliances, here and there fairly regularly, wherever there's a convenient pullout in the road. They used to do it on a section of my dad's property, which he never used, until he fenced it off with barbed wire.

I used to go for walks a lot, and just on the outskirts of town, there is a road from which you can see an old train track below. People have dumped refrigerator and stoves there (you have to have a concerted effort to load them up, find a spot, and toss them).

Not to let the litterbugs off the hook, because I think they will pay sooner or later from what they do to our environment...(God must have a special place for them later), but...I think we should be able to go to the dump and not pay. It should be free. Hey we're all paying taxes and it should include being able to toss out our garbage.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

I ask this in all seriousness... are things like banana peels, apple cores, peach pits, etc. considered littering? I would never throw them out in the middle of the road, but I have tossed them over into the woods by the side of the road as I drive -- always in a non populated, rural area. I figured these are biodegradable, so what's the harm? Correct me if I'm wrong!

I see your point, JeanneMarie and it makes me remember some friends who took a trip to the Boundary Waters. "Pack it or poop it" was what they were told and that's what they did. ;-)
