Amy Bento's Kickbox Surge - Awesome!

Dela

Cathlete
I just finished Amy's new kickbox dvd, and it was AWESOME :D:D:D, this is definitely my favorite Amy dvd to date, the music and the routines are so much fun, the choreography is a little tricky for me, but I picked it up faster than usual. (There are other Amy's that I can't do at all).

If you are a fan of kickboxing dvds, and want a high energy fun and sweaty workout, buy this NOW!!!

I take a live kickboxing class with heavy bags, and it is a tough class, but at the end of 60 minutes of this, my calorie burn was 100 calories more than it is in my live class.

And in the spirit of paying the enabling forward ;), Fit44 provided a discount code earlier today for 20% off of dvds on fitnessfly.com.

Does it more closely resemble her Kickbox Extreme, or her more recent In The Ring, or Rumble?

IOW, is it hi/lo cardio with a kickboxing flare, or is it low-impact, high intensity kick & punch?

Thanks,
Sandra

Hmmm tough questions for me, I don't do a lot of cardio dvds, only kickboxing, boot camp, and recently drill max. I could not follow KB extreme, the choreography was too hard, so I can't fairly compare. I don't thing it's anything like Rumble, Rumble I feel is a good kick/punch workout, but kind of mild , in the Ring I think did quite a while back and can't really remember it, soooo....

I don't think it falls into either of your categories above, it's more like a drill style high impact, high intensity workout with kickboxing kicking and punching, lots of jump kicks, jumping and squats with the kicking/punching combos, she does show modifcations for the higher impact jumping moves.

Here is the description from the DVD:
"Kickbox Surge is a new mix of 5 Kickbox combos interspersed with 5 heart pumping "surges" of kick-boxing athletic style drills creating a challenging workout for all fitness levels. A modifier will be provided for most of the higher impact moves and kickbox combos. The kickbox combos are filled with kicks and punches of varying tempos. Amy will cool you down properly before you refine your core. You will need a 6 to 8 pound medicine ball to properly train the muscles of the mid body resulting in a stronger and refined core. Finally, a stretch to restore your muscles for the next workout."

Hey Dela:

glad you like your new workout! I need to try ITR and maybe Rumble from Netflix but I really didn't like the Bento workout I got before, just can't remember which one... I did watch some of the clip from Collage... do you need a great deal of room to do the workout? It appears she moves around a LOT! :) I don't have that much room in my little bedroom/workout room! even without the bed! HA! Keep on working! :)

Hey Dani! There was one segment with 'triangle shuffles' that if you do them full out, needs a bit of room, but you can just make your steps/shuffles smaller, other than that, you need enough room to be able to kick in all directions, and adding in some extra room for some side jump kicks. If you can do Kick Punch Crunch in your space, I think this one can work too by taking smaller steps on a couple of the moves.

I really like Amy's personality, so I always want to like her dvds, but I had a problem with a few of them that were just too choreographically challenging for me, like Kickbox extreme was too much for me. If I remember correctly, I think I liked In the Ring, and I do like Rumble when I just want to move, but don't want crazy intensity. I really like her weight workout All pump extreme too, lots of variety in that one, but that one is truly a kitchen sink workout, I used every piece of equipment and every inch of my workout space for that one.

If you can rent it from netflix, I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

thanks...

for enabling me ;D I had planned on preordering but thought that STS was enough...but now I won't be running quite as much after this weekend (running a half marathon on Sunday!) and I'm ready for some fun new cardio. I would agree that her choreography or method of teaching isn't quite as smooth as Cathe...her workouts are still a lot of fun for me! (I totally caved...ordered the kickbox surge and her dynamic kettlebell one!)
have a great weekend!

Wow, good luck at your marathon this Sunday!

I had pre-ordered the kettlebell one too and have it, but have not looked at it yet. With the discount code today I ordered the new Kim Spreen kickbox and Squeeze Stronger, I had wanted the K. Spreen one, but I'm a sucker for free shipping so I just picked another dvd that people talked about on these boards .

HA! Dela is one of the best enablers around! She has spent more of MY money than she knows! :)

I can't wait to give it a try!

I ordered this weekend with a 20% off coupon from Fitness Fly. Within hours of placing the order it shipped! It's on the way:D
I have Kimberly Spreen's newest CIA workout, and the music is awesome! The workout is a mixture of kickboxing, fitness ball work, and combat sword moves with the bodybar. I'm so excited I get to do the workout this morning:cool:

Anyone interested in the Fitness Fly coupon code:MD2009 (good through May 3 when you order 2 dvds-free shipping too! )

I find it more like KBX but easier to learn. The choreography looks a lot trickier to me than it actually is. I usually have to angle myself for a combo or two to fit it in, but it's so worth it to me for Amy's workouts. It is a fun sweatfest and I love that the combo's don't go on endlessly. I would not call this anywhere near low impact. I've done the Surge premix which has you do the Surges through twice....tough! I've done the workout as is....I was sweating and working hard my first time through so after a couple more times when I really know it, I can't even imagine! The music is awesome. Somehow Amy keeps delivering creative workouts and she usually gets my preorder dollar and it used to be that the ONLY instructor who got my preorder dollar was Cathe. This is probably not for the kickbox purists but for someone who wants a fun, tough, sweaty, motivating workout...BUY IT!!!!

I just finished the Kickbox Surge and LOVED it! I am a fan of Amy's hi/lo and this was much easier to pick up from a choreography standpoint. I think I could have done it without a preview and only stumble over a few small things and I always always always preview Amy DVDs. It is high intensity and impact like Amy always is, but the modifier shows some good options. And dare I say, it isn't quite as intense as her other hi/lo and kickbox DVDs? I mean, just a tad easier- a wee bit. :) Anyway, it is a new favorite and the music is awesome!

Thanks Cynthia- I ordered Kimberly's new one yesterday with your coupon code and can't wait!

I just finished Kim's Kickbox Surge. I'm a sweaty mess.:D The medicine ball segments are deceiving. They look easy:eek: I have a 6lb ball and it was too heavy. I need to drop down to like a 3 or 4lb ball.
This is a great 60 minute steady state(mostly) workout. There are 2 small higher intensity intervals, but I consider this a good workout following a day of high intensity intervals. It's not the most challenging workout in my collection, but it definitely has a place in my rotations.
I seriously need more bodybar combat workouts! They are very workout segments.:D

Thanks for the review- I like having a variety of intensity too and I think Kimberly is so motivating. What kind of bar did you use? Where do you get it? I have a weighted bar, but it is 15 pounds and way too long I think.

I have a 6lb bar from BodyBar.com. They offer free shipping, so it was cheaper to buy the original Body Bar vs. the off brands. I like the Body Bar brand because the bar itself is covered in a foam type rubber. Kim recommends 6-9lb bar 4ft long. You can start out with just a wooden dowel.
I forgot to mention..... according to BodyBugg, I burned a little over 500 calories during that workout!:D

For more bodybar workouts....I purchased Kim's CIA 2705 (more combat intervals) and Mindy Mylrea's All Systems Go workout.
