Aluminum can question-water related!

Okay, I have been reading on this forum about the water bottle/plastic contamination of our bottled water, and the suggestion to try different means to carry your water. I ordered a Kleen Kanteen for my DH and A Sigg for me after reading all of the info here. But my question is about Aluminium contamination. Is this a problem? Can it be leeched into the water like plastic? I don't drink soft drinks, but it seems like a long time ago, just before the bottle water craze hit, you could get water in a can like soda, but now you can't. Any info? My uncle is a chiropractor, I love him dearly, and he thinks that aluminium is dangerous, period. HE won't touch a soft drink or an aluminum can. He also won't use hair gel, but that's a whole other story...;)
 
I don't know the way that the world is heading I wont be able to wear my tinfoil hat to prevent the alien cosmic rays from Area 51 from harming me. Laugh I'm joking.

I read somewhere about 15yrs ago that aluminum can help cause Alzheimers. Guess what, we still have aluminum cans, we still have aluminum cookware, there is still aluminum in most baking powders.

Nowadays people are beating plastic too.

Some forms of glass are bad. Pewter is bad. Improperly fired ceramics can cause lead poisoning.

Coffee supposedly caused cancer, a year later coffee helps prevent colon cancer.

Rent the Woody Allen movie, Sleeper. Its about a guy that wakes up after being frozen a long time. People are eating chocolate and smoking because in the story it was recognized that all of the things that were bad for you turned out to be good for you.

I try not to be condescending to people that caught up in all of the pop science research but the internet has brought on a bunch of it and most of it is BS. Please qualify anything you read on the internet.

As far as the canteen, I'm sure if you put a days use in it, or a workouts use in it and you rinsed it out between uses you're going to be just fine.

I have to put my tinfoil hat on now.....
 
Great post Dave, you said it well.

These days, everything supposedly causes cancer. I eat healthy, exercise, and have everything in moderation.

You just can't live in fear!

It is very possible aluminum is harmful if too much gets into our system. I would try to stay away from it, because there is so much of it in our environment anyway.

Aluminum content is generally not high (less that 10 mg/kg) in most foods with the exception of a few such as tea, spinach, and so on, that contain more amounts of it. However, aluminum content is much high in foods in those aluminum-containing food additives are used. After drinking water is treated with aluminum-containing coagulant agent, it's aluminum concentration increases. The aluminum intake of residents from cookware in our country is 4 mg/(capit.d). The aluminum intake in adults is usually 10 mg/(capit.d), but it will rise up to tens to hundreds mg/(capit.d) when residents consume foods with a high aluminum concentration or aluminum-containing drugs. Aluminum is absorbed mainly via a duodenum, and this can be influenced by multiple factors. Absorbed aluminum is discharged primarily by renal excretion. Aluminum accumulation in human body might harm central nervous system, bone lesions, and hemopoietic system, and is a suspected causal factor to Alzheimer's disease.

I just keep thinking... my grandfather drank whisky, ate bacon everyday of his life, drank more coffee than water, and smoked till he was 72, when he found out it caused cancer and quit cold turkey. He rolled his own cigarettes! He lived to be 96 and was healthy for all but the last three weeks of his life. He died of complications from the flu. He was extremely active... I remember him out chopping wood well into his 80's. Point, health has a lot to do with genetics and activity. Eating is only part of the picture. I think enjoying life might be important too!

I am unaware of any glass issues. Can you give more information? I store our filtered water in glass containers as I thought it was a safe alternative.
 
Glass on the whole is very safe. If you buy things like Waterford Crystal some of the other lead crystal containers, I believe you'll see the warning in the literature.

Beautiful vases and such, bad drinking glasses.

The US bans certain china as it isn't glazed at a high enough temperature and some impurities can leach into the food.

The leaching on the whole isn't going to happen when you are actively using a product. Its when you store something in it for a while.

I have orange Fiestaware plates, cups and such. These were from the original collection. They used uranium by-products to get the color. I saw a display at the former Maine Yankee nuke plant using a fiestaware cup. It was very hot on the geiger counter. I like to use them as they give me lotsa energy! Don't dare microwave food on them as I might sustain a nuclear reaction. LOL

Of course, the radiation isn't as much as the naturally occurring Radon in my cellar with all this good Vermont granite around me. And a 4 hour hike in sunshine with the solar radiation.

We have to live our lives otherwise what is the purpose of living?
 
Sorry, didn't realize you were refering to lead crystal. That is a problem. I think plain glass is OK though. Thanks for writing back.

So, what are we going to use now when in the car, etc? I drink a lot of water and am accustomed to just leaving a very large PLASTIC bottle in there at all times. I need another solution.
 
OK, thanks Allison. I just ordered four bottles for my family. Thanks for the info!

PS I ordered from their direct web site. For those looking to buy as well check other web sites first. I found another site AFTER I had already placed my order. They priced the bottles about four dollars less apiece. I could have saved $16.00 on the order :(
 
Okay, I just recieved my SIGG bottles today. I ordered one for each of us (DH, 2DS and me) Are these no good??? I thought they were treated with something on the inside so the water/beverage doesn't touch the aluminum.

The Siggs bottles have a non-reactive lining (they won't say what it is exactly, because it's proprietary...maybe a type of ceramic?) that is supposed to be 100% non-leaching, and the water is never in contact with aluminum (just like many stainless steel pans have an enclosed piece of aluminum in the base for better heat distribution, but the aluminum never comes in contact with food.
