Alright, who pees when they run?

Cathlete
I started working out again 1 1/2 weeks after Brooke was born and it didn't take me long to get back into doing all of Cathes workouts unmodified. Anyway, I just started running again last week after taking about a year off. I ran 3 miles and every once in a while I could tell I was "leaking".

This never happened before Brooke. But, I had a 4th degree tear during delivery and then the doctor wasn't happy with the 40+ stitches so he took them out and started over. This was almost 4 months ago. So, I assume this has something to do with it.

So my question is, does this happen to anyone else and will it ever get better? I want to keep running but I don't want to always have a trail behind me:eek:

I have the same problem when I do aerobics. Unfortunately I have to wear incontinence pads when I work out.

In my experience ob/gyns aren't the ones to go to to get diagnosis on this front. You should see someone specialized like a urologist instead (if you feel the need to see a doctor).

My incontinence is a result of childbirth, but I think is a more unusual type. My bladder muscles can't push out all of the pee, so my bladder isn't empty even after I go pee. And the urologist was able to see this by having me empty my bladder, then he used a catheter and got a ton of urine out that I couldn't feel or push out. The ob/gyn told me I needed a surgery to insert a hammock to support my bladder. The urologist told me if I had this done it would make my problem worse because I already have a hard enough time pushing the pee out as it is, with a hammock inserted I would have an even harder time!

So my urine leaks out due to the impact of the exercise since I can't get it all out when I pee. I think most incontinence from childbirth is just a lack of tone in the pelvic/kegel muscles to keep the bladder in it's proper place (or something like that).

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. I think incontinence is a common problem, but people don't always want to talk about it.

Edited to add: How has your 4th degree tear healed? Does it feel back to normal yet? I am curious because I tore also.

Always! On long runs (+15K) I need a change of incontinence pads. Can't do jumping jacks either without leaking. So I modify those.

Kegels don't work for me. Tried and tried and tried. Even saw a PT who specialised in this.

My problem is a bit different. I've had incontinence problems even in PE class when I was a teenager. Got worse after child birth.

I experience the same problem whenever I do anything with a 2 foot take off. So, that means the IMAXes are tough! I always wear a panty liner. My ob/gyn suggested kegels, but I can't seem to remember to do them. He also suggested a sling procedure if the situation worsens. I don't know if this is the same thing as the hammock procedure that was mentioned. I've learned to deal with it, but that doesn't mean I like it! Phyllis

Don't feel bad you are not alone. :) I usually wear a panty liner when I know I'm doing a long tough workout just to prevent any leakage.

ME!
After four pregnancies and vaginal deliveries what can I say?
I wear a light pad for all impact activity. Kegals? Not helpful at this stage of the game.

PS this in one reason I won't run outside!

I find that this happens with me to, especially if I drink a lot the night before a run. My thing is I sometimes don't know how much is sweat and how much is leakage. Because I get so warm down there from the run I sweat too. I just put on a pad and go. I think it will get better for you as you continue to run.

Thank you all so much. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. I guess I'll work on the kegels and wear a pantyliner and see what happens.

Missy - Thanks for the link.

Emy - Everything "downstairs" just feels different now and I can't even describe it but sometimes it still feels like my insides are going to drop out(if that makes any sense). I figure I'll probably need a hysterectomy somewhere down the road especially after we have another child somewhere in the future. :( But, when I went for my 6 week check, my doctor said that I look "down there" like I've never had a baby. I'm sure he was lying.x(
