Allergic Reaction to Bactrim (Any Nurses/MDs out there?...

Has anyone ever taken the drug Bactrim and developed a bad allergic reaction? It was prescribed to me by my dermatologist and is supposed to be an antibiotic, however within half an hour of taking it I developed a severe allergic reaction.

This is the most bizarre thing I ever experienced, I took one pill on Sunday and within half an hour my lips started tingling and hurting and by Monday morning my lips were so swollen. They seriously were Angelina Jolie lips times two. My lips have slowly deflated over the week but now I am left with sores (I don't know if these would be considered cold sores?) all over the inside of my mouth that are very painful.

Just wondering if anyone had such a severe reaction, especially after taking one pill. I actually took this drug about ten years ago and had a different reaction, I was a lifeguard in college and developed a really bad rash/sunburn, apparently this drug makes you very sun sensitive. I did remember this incident when I was prescribed the pills again, but figured I would be fine since I don't spend much time in the sun anymore. Guess I was wrong, though...what the heck is in this stuff?

I know this isn't a MD forum by any means, but does anyone have suggestions on how to lessen the pain of the sores in my mouth or even better make them go away (I know we have a few nurses on these boards!). I'm sure they'll go away on their own eventually, but obviously if I can expedite the healing, I'll do it!

Thanks for any suggestions and be careful if you take this drug!

Do you have an allergy to sulfonamides? Bactrim is a sulfonamide and can cause this type of reaction. You should stop taking it immediately and call your doctor. You probably need something else.

Yes, Bactrim is a sulpha drug, I am also allergic to it (and found out the hard way). You should also give your pharmacist and doctor a "sulpha med" warning for the future.

Do not ever take Bactrim or any other sulfonamide again. Lips swelling is a serious reaction, but next time it might be worse. Bactrim is very notorious for these types of reactions. Please notify your physician and list it as an allergy. Take some benadryl if you are not allergic to it.
