ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930 - 1970's

Fifties gal here

I remember:

eating raw cake/cookie/pancake batter (with raw eggs in it)from the bowl, raw bacon, and milk straight from the cow and never even thinking that it could kill me - it never did.

my mom saying "because I said so" and actually respecting the statement!

when divorce in school was a rare occurrence - now in my daughter's school, parents who actually stay married to one another is rare.

when whole milk, fried eggs and potatoes, bacon, and white toast with butter was considered a healthy breakfast.

when digging in the dirt with a friend was considered "valuable and appropriate social interaction".

when working out/exercising was something only the fanatics did - guess we "catheites" wouldn't have stood a chance back then!!!

>I never hitch-hiked. No way!

When I was an undergrad (mid 70's) I hitchhiked almost every day to get from lower campus to upper campus because I didn't have a car. Never had a problem (but refused to take a ride that I thought was "iffy"--like a van with two guys in, who stopped a bit "too enthusiastically" after I put my thumb down) and even had a couple of regular drivers (a painter at the school and a woman who drove her brother's car that had fuzzy dice hanging off the rear-view mirror).

I would never even consider doing such a thing today. I guess I felt safe in the town I was in at the time, and the place I was at.

This thread is great. I was born in 1958.

And there was no super sizing! We had a pop machine in High School but a little small cup came out with a bunch of ice and a tiny bit of pop.

And, yes, we walked everywhere.

Great read! Remember the smell of clean laundry drying on the clothesline. My first trip downtown (7 years old) wearing a dress, hat, pat n leather shoes and white ankle socks. It was such a thrill. Oh and taking the bus for the first time. Everyone took buses at that time. Lunch at the counter at Woolworth's. Playing cards in the spokes of your bike wheels. What a cool sound that made. Burning leaves at the curb instead of bagging them. Rollerskates with keys. Transistor radios. O.K. let me stop now. I miss those days.

Remember too, when there was usually just one or two disruptive kids in the classroom, and their behavior was considered shocking? According to the teachers I know, these days, they're lucky if, in a classroom of 35 kids, 5 of them show up well-rested, emotionally calm, nutritionally balanced and prepared to learn. Sad.

I do remember giving my mom "lip," though I was smart enough to be a good ten or twelve feet away when I did..:D

I was just talking to DH about this the other night. I must be a miracle because I actually rode my bike without a helmet and fell, a lot! I also rode my skateboard without a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads and, I fell a lot, and somehow, here I am, alive, unscathed, and without serious head injury. Makes you go hmmm.

The acceptance of women and exercise is one thing I REALLY value now - when I was in my 20's, the only exercise was Jack LaLanne! I look at his old shows now on ESPN Classic, and I'm amazed at how ahead of his time he was!
