Air Popped Popcorn

Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts good or bad about Air Popped Popcorn. I am addicted to the stuff. I pour dry kernels into a bowl, place a plate on top of the bowl and microwave for 3 mins. It's easy and no oil, butter or salt !! (I know boring)

I can not seem to get a good take on the calorie count of cooking popcorn like this, the calorie count on the bag is cooking it in oil. Orville kernels show 15 calories for 3tbs air popped. Think this could be right ?

Any thoughts would be appreciated greatly !!
Thanks,
Annette (upearly)

I don't see any problem with it. It has fiber, which is good for you. It's low in calories. It doesn't have trans fats, like most microwave popcorn does. Go for it!
As for the calorie count, popcorn is odd: some of the values are for "unpopped kernels" and some are for popped kernels. Most packages show both values.

Thanks Kathryn,
I appreciate you responding !! With all the "low carb" hype I was worried I was doing something bad eating popcorn. I think the biggest issue I have right now and the changes in my body is AGE !! I all of a sudden seem to be in a real SLUMP !! I was doing REALLY good and seeing lots of changes in being more lean, but seems the last month has been real hard to hold on to the "lean" I have gotten. I have really studied my diet, and by no means clean eating, but healthy, lots of fruits and vegs and lots and lots of water. Glad I am ok with my air popped popcorn...!! Thanks again for responding !
Take care,

Calorieking.com has a great database for searching calorie and nutritional information on food - they're great for fast-food and prepackaged food info to. I'm trying to find the USDA site which is the best...(editing to add it in):
www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/cgi-bin/nut_search.pl

BTW, calorieking shows airpopped popcorn at 31 calories per popped cup. It's one of my favorite snacks.

Annette, I'm actually going to try your method of air popping (never thought of it before!). I like to sprinkle a bit of nutritional yeast on my popcorn to add a slight "cheesy" flavor (I usually spray on a bit of tamari first, to keep the yeast on the kernels!).

I used to board with a family that traditionally ate very lightly on Sundays. Instead of dinner, we would have popcorn and watch "Ellery Queen" (which shows how long ago that was!)

Kathryn,
Wanted to let you know to be sure to use a glass/micro safe bowl and place. The popcorn kernels get REALLY hot, so be really careful taking the bowl out of the micro !!
Thanks,
Annette

Wow, wish I'd known about this when I paid $15 for a microwave popcorn popper at Wally World. BTW, I eat microwave popcorn every day! Love it!

This is from a bag of Jolly Time popcorn:
2 Tbsp unpooped = about 5 cups popped
calories 100
total fat 1g
cholesterol 0g
sodium0g
total carbohydrate 24g ( fiber 6g cugars <1g)
protein 4g
I also air pop my popcorn in a microwave. I bought a special container to do it about 15 years ago at Wegmans in Syracuse,NY. It has a vented top and a "well" in the bottom for the kernals. It works well. I have never seen another one. I would be a case of them to share if I did!

Annette-
I don't know what the glycemic index is for popcorn, but I think it's a great food for helping with weight loss or maintenance. The calories are very low, and it has lots of fiber. Also, plain popcorn is obviously clean eating, and it's filling. Most of all for me, I love it and it takes a long time to eat so I don't eat other worse stuff while I'm busy eating it. I can make a bag of Redenbacher's low fat popcorn last for a whole episode of Law & Order, which I seem to also be addicted to lately. :) I say, enjoy your air-popped popcorn! (Amazing that you like it that way! Good for you!!)

I guess I'd rather have "unpooped" popcorn than "pooped" popcorn! Thanks for the unintentional laugh!:+
