Advice re: yoga rotation

I was reading some previous posts re: yoga rotations and thought that might be a wise choice for me during the hoiday season. My question is do you do yoga exclusively or do you incorporate cardio? If so, what's the breakdown (e.g. days of cardio/days of yoga)? I have the 3 Brian Kest videos, one Baptiste, and one very hard one (can't remember the name, but it could probably count for a cardio!), and a couple of Pilates-based ones that are on the beginner/intermediate level. FYI, I'm not new to yoga, but I've put it on the back-burner for a year or so in favor of Cathe's new tapes. I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi CinDee,

I'm fairly new to yoga and like you have put it on the back burner for weight training. But another poster, Cinza, got me fired up and I started a yoga rotation last Sunday. I only have the 3 Kest tapes so far and this past week I alternated them with Cathe's Rhythmic Step, Cardio Kicks and Imax. The yoga felt really good and it amazes me how the sequence of poses beginning with "prayer twist" in Kest Vol 2 seems to work my quads as well as LL. I'm planning to do this type of rotation for 3 -4 wks and then move on to S&H for 3 wks, then yoga again, PS, yoga, CTX etc. I don't know if this is the wisest choice of rotations but I really want to expand with yoga and that means practice! The hardest part for me is to keep from getting anxious about not lifting weights.

Hopefully you'll get some more experienced suggestions!

I'm not sure what tapes you have etc. but what I do is M-W-F cardio and weights (I teach a class and do BodyPump or Powerhour) then on T-Th I do cardio and yoga. Seems to cover it all. Also on the weekend if I get the motivation I'll do yoga as well.

Cid,
What is the name of the "really hard" yoga video that you have that you could also count as a cardio? I'd love to know..

Thanks.

Hi CinDee! I practice yoga once a week. I do weight lifting and cardio Monday through Friday and on Sunday I'll incorporate either yoga or Pilates. I prefer doing YogaSculpt by Karen Voight, Ali McGraw Yoga for Mind & Body or Yoga with Ateeka. After doing these 3 instructors you get to see and feel the different styles that they incorporate. I went back to doing Power Yoga w/Bryan Kest and to tell you the truth the poses just don't flow well at all. This is just my personal opinion though. Everybody's different. Anyway I found that doing a rotation of yoga for one week and then going back to weight lifting and cardio just didn't cut it for me. I was losing my flexibility and having to start from scratch. Also for me doing yoga every day for one week was too much for my body to handle. Maybe not for you. You just have to see what the right blend is for you. Have fun experimenting! Kathy

It's Mark Blanchard's "Embracing Power Yoga". It's over an hour and I had to modify most of the moves requiring you to support your body weight with your upper body. I can lift heavy, but moves like that are very tough for me. My heart rate was up there during those poses! CinDee

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'm going to continue with the CTX series until Thanksgiving, then switch to alternating days of cardio and yoga until the new year. Perhaps a day of total body weight training could be thrown in, but I'm not certain my muscles could handle power yoga AND weight training (especially Cathe's weight training!). It'll be fun to throw Rythmic Step and IMAX back into the mix. We'll see how it goes, and if I need more advice in the future...

Thanks again,
CinDee
