Advice needed!

I broke my right foot last night and now I can't do my aerobics. I figure I can lift weights sitting in a chair for my upper body but I can't do my treadmill or a bench tape. Any suggestions?

Today I spent the day hopping on my good foot while searching drug stores for crutches -- so that is good for today but 6 WEEKS.

How awful!

You poor thing!! The only thing I can think of ,is Collage Video has a tape called chairobics or something like that. It's in the speciality section I think. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Ouch, Susan!

I can relate, I tore the ligaments in my left ankle in May. I gotta tell you, I got an exhausting workout just "crutching" everywhere!! I just got back into working out and testing my ankle strength about three - four weeks ago.
I can tell you that you will be able to do your upper body workouts, even if you sit in a chair. You can also do abs, or even lying leg lifts. (Of course, just using your crutches will be enough leg work at first!) Modify it and make it yours!
Don't get discouraged, THIS TOO, SHALL PASS. Believe me, I got a test in faith this summer!
I know how depressing it can get, just remember it isn't forever.
Let us know how you're doing, that's what we're here for!

Ask Cathe!

Susan - I saw this post AFTER I responded to your -mail, hang in there kiddo - I'm trying really hard to think of an upside - maybe it's the opportunity to focus on upper body.

If you do a thread search I'm pretty sure Cathe had responded to someone else in a similar situation that they could still do SOME of the PS upper body work - only of course after consulting with the doctor, etc.

Good for you for keeping focused on what you can do!

Ouch

Did your have a lot of soreness under your arms using crutches? The doctor wanted me to take PT to learn how to use the darn things but actually I am quite fast at walking with them but the soreness under my arms is horrible. Of course, last night the children needed me to help them and the dog had to be chased -- so my first day on them I used them constantly.

make sure you aren't HANGING

from the crutches. Don't hang your upper body by the underarms. Lower the crutches a little bit. Your weight should be resting on your HANDS on the handrests, not hanging from your underarms. Of course, that will make your hands REALLY sore too. What I did was I would hang from the armpits one day, then do it the way I was supposed to (weight in the hands) for another. That way I was sore first one place, then the next, until I was worked up to being able to do it the right way with my weight in my hands all the time. You WILL get good muscular development in your upper body just from crutching around!!

Broken foot

Hi, Susan,
I am so sorry to hear about your foot! I know how hard it will be! I can give you some advice about cardio, but I'd definately check with my doctor before I tried even my suggestions.
My husband broke his foot in two places and cracked his other heel (and broke his arm) the first week of July. He's the most consistently fit person I know and he's forty and unstoppable. So, here is what he found that he could do after he let his foot heal for about a week...He strapped on a sturdy boot and used the recumbant bike at the Y. He found that it didn't put too much pressure on his foot and could work up a good sweat. The other thing he found that he could do was swim.
Hope this helps and I wish I could be there to help you out physically. I know how hard it is to just "get something"! You are in my prayers.

Thanks

Thank you for all the good advice. This morning I started putting more weight on my hands -- I think I will alternate arms one day and hands the next. I am finding when cooking in the kitchen it is easier to hop from place to place. The doctor said I will need crutches for 7 to 10 days and then I can start putting some weight on the broken foot. I now have an appreciation for my two boys in wheelchairs -- it is much harder to be waited on than to wait on someone to help.

Hi Susan!

I just read this now. Sorry to hear about your foot. How are things coming along? Have you told your doctor that you enjoy working out? Be sure to ask him if there are any specific exercises that you should not be doing at this time. Sometimes putting a certain weight load on your body too soon can interfere with the healing process. Much luck to you. Keep us posted!

Hi, Cathe

My doctor got a kick out of me hopping all the way in from the parking lot and down a hallway to the exam room and driving myself in. Because of your tapes I was not even winded. In fact, I hopped all over town looking for crutches to rent and never did get winded. Pretty good for 42! He told me as long as I did not put weight on the foot for 10 days or so I could do anything. It was not displaced too badly. I asked him about the pool and he said he was afraid that I would stand on the foot and I had to wait for at least 7 to 10 days.

My biggest fear is that I will have a thin leg (the hopping one) and a fat leg (the one in the attractive shoe).

Your funny!

But actually it would be the other way around. The immobile leg is the one that gets skinnier(muscle atrophy) and the mobile leg gets bigger(muscle working extra hard). Don't worry, it would take longer than a week for that to be that noticeable. Happy Healing!

Attractive Shoe??!!LOL!

I believe you will be fine throughout this process, simply because you've kept your sense of humor!! I know that's all that saves us sometimes is to be able to laugh at the ridiculousness of a situation. While I used my crutches (6 of the 10 to 12 days that were recommended!), my underarms did get sore. Not because I was putting the weight on my underarm, I think it had more to do with the bumping around of the top of the crutch and the fact that a woman is not meant to walk around like Arnold in the Terminator, with her arms held out "to here"!
