Advice for beginner pushups

I do bent knee pushups whenever Cathe does pushup exercises. I can still only do 4 or 5 without rest.:-( I am gaining strength in other areas and increasing weights. Can I do a few pushups daily? Can I do them on rest days? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for this question and answer! I forgot about negative pushups. I had read somewhere that the negative movement is very important for building strength.
 
I just wanted to add that I've been doing these negatives awhile and it's been slow, but I've been seing nice gains :) I just did GS Chest & Triceps on Sunday and did 34 of the 72 pushups on my toes, the rest on my knees, and I took no extra breaks (no pausing my DVD player, lol). I used to not be able to do more than 2 on my toes, so working the negatives definitely helps! Good luck on your pushup goals :)
