Adopt-a-cage program

Fellow animal lovers:

For a "special" Christmas gift for my boys this year, I am adopting each of them a cat cage at our local humane society. It's only $20 a month per cage and it supports the species (cat, dog, rabbit, or other creature) of your choosing (ie, whoever the resident is for the month). They put your recipient's name on the cage and everything, so it's particularly nice for kids.

I think this is such a great way to help an animal without necessarily moving them in. :) (I'm at capacity and the SO would move out, I am sure, lol.)

Anyway, just a suggestion!

What a great idea!! I never heard of that program around here, but we usually donate to area animal shelters. I also donate to shelters in areas where there have been natural disasters, like hurricanes and tornado's.

Marie,

That's a wonderful idea and so cool to teach kids about giving to those in need at Christmas because animals are in need too.

A bunch of my friends always get together at Christmas and exchange gifts and it's always so hard to know what to get each other, as I'm sure you know. So this year I talked everybody into making a group donation to our local animal shelter. They all loved the idea and it took the pressure off of trying to figure out what to buy each other. :)

That's a great idea! As is the 'adopt a cage' program (though I much prefer "cageless" shelters like my local ones, because the cats can stay there longer without being euthanized...cats don't fare well in cages for too long.)

Some other ideas: in honor of the 'where do the socks go' thread, consider making catnip socks out of unmatched socks and take them to your local shelter for the cats. (Just put a small handful of catnip in the toe of a sock, put a knot above the catnip, optionally trimming off any 'ankle' parts longer than 2 inches, and there you have it!

marie,

great idea. i am a major animal lover and support many groups. one of my favorite is best friends animal sanctuary. they are in kanab, utah. i was fortunate enough to visit this summer. the place is amazing. i so far sponsor two cats, a dog, two goats and a horse.

wishing you and your family a wonderful christmas, and a happy and healthy new year!

kathryn -

I do the same as you with the catnip only I use knees high nylons that have runs in them. If you put the nylon on your hand you can grab a small handful of catnip and pull the nylon over your hand turning it inside out and keeping the catnip inside. Then I tie a knot, pull the nylon over the catnip again and tie a second knot adn cut off the extra. Does that make sense?

The cats are hilarious throwing them around and pouncing on them. Plus, if it tears a little they can get a little taste of the catnip that falls through the hole!

Just a thought.

Hi, Susan.
I never thought of using nylons (actually, one of the workers at the shelter suggested it, because she has some, but we decided that they might get a hole in too easily, and there's no loose catnip allowed in the cat rooms because it makes a big mess).

I'll have to remember that for my cats (I don't care about catnip mess) next time I come across some nylons that I would otherwise toss.
