Abs issues with pushups

I've been doing pushups for a long time, and at this point, I'd like to think that I'm using correct form. I carefully watch to make sure that I'm not dropping my hips or too piked while working.

Lately, my lower abs have been feeling it more than anything while doing pushups. Normally I would consider that good, but it has not improved. I have not changed my form or anything like that (I've tried to adjust a little for more comfort to no avail).

This morning while doing LIC, I think I may have actually pulled a muscle.

This is a new development, and I'm just doing the same garden variety pushups that I've been doing for years.

Anyone ever experience this or have any thoughts on what's up?
I'm going to back off of them for a few days again, but this is very frustrating.

You certainly will gain core & upper body strength w/ pushups, but I think you need to do this in tandem w/ a really good core & upper body routine. One helps the other. I think you can only go so far with one exercise by itself, you know? It is possible you need to up the ante in those departments. What does your current routine look like? How often do you incorporate the pushups? Maybe then we could help you a bit more.

I agree with Deb about a good strong core for pushups. I have been doing standard pushups for several years now. And I can tell you when I fudge on doing my abdominal work I am not as strong with my pushups. I feel it more in the abs. Just a thought!!

That's a good call Catherine!
I HAVE been slacking in the ab work department for the last few weeks...and come to think of it, that's about when this little issue started.

Guess I'll try bumping up the ab work and see how that works.

Thanks for the help!
