About that 1/2 marathon

I shared earlier about the improvement in my running times and thought I'd share what I did when I ran the marathon relay a few weeks ago.

When I run long distances I need to use energy gels or else I run out of steam and slow waaaaay down. They tend to bother my digestive tract though and keep me in the bathroom for the rest of the day after the race.

I thought I'd try taking some Immodium AD before the run. I had done an internet search for runner's trots and that was one of the suggestions I read about.

The night before the race I bought some medicine and took a good healthy dose of it before I went to catch the bus up to the start of the race. It was very early in the morning and I didn't have time to prepare breakfast so I ate a Power Bar while waiting for my relay partner.

To my dismay I started cramping up and had to use the porta potty twice before he got there. The hand off went nicely and I was running good. At about 5 miles into it I had the most horrible cramps. Again! Thank goodness there were porta potties at that point. I actually stopped in the middle of a race to use one.

I made it through the remainder of the race without incident but the problem persisted well into the late afternoon.

I complained to my husband that I am just unable to eat any sort of energy bar, gel, what have you.

The day after traveling back home to California from Utah my husband cleaned the junk that accumulates on long trips out of the truck. He brought my medicine up and set it on the kitchen counter. I did a double take. Maybe a triple take.

It wasn't Immodium AD. It was Milk of Magnesia. Milk of Mangnesia is a laxative.

So, that's one of the reasons I think Cathe is the best because even with all of that I still ran a good race!:)

OHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOO!! :)

Well, at least you knew the culprit. What happened? Did you grab the wrong bottle at the drugstore, or was it a mixup at home?

Glad you ran a good race even if you did take MOM before hand!!
