I'm thinking about getting this DVD. I don't have a medicine ball - would I be able to substitute a free weight for the med ball exercises? Also, I'm really interested in the gliding section of this DVD. I'm assuming that the gliding section includes more leg work. I don't have the discs yet -- and I have read in some instances where people use sturdy paper plates. Do you think initially it would be okay to use the paper plates? Your suggestions/comments would be so very helpful. Thanks.

You can do it without the med ball (less intense but still a good workout) but you can't really sub a dumbbell for most of the exercises - some of them she is throwing the ball in the air and I'm pretty sure you don't want to be tossing iron overhead. :)

And yes, you can use sturdy paper plates but the crumpling noise is a little bothersome. I used the plastic dixie version for the best slide on carpet, but again, the noise was really irritating. I just ordered my gliding set and can't wait to get them!

Great workout, by the way!

I just saw a cheaper price on gliding discs though www.dynamixmusic.com ($15.99, I think, just for the discs).

The med ball segement of "all about abs" wouldn't be as effective without the med ball, IMO. In addition to tossing the ball back and forth, you do core push-ups with one or both hands on the ball (any other substitute would be too stable and not as challenging).

I ordered the discs and Mindy's Basic Gliding DVD. It was only a few dollars more ($4, I think) and I thought would be a good intro to that type of workout in general.
