A variation on firewalkers

I saw a trainer doing this w/one of his clients the other day & it looked pretty tough, so I thought I'd pass it on.

He had the client stand w/her feet spread & the band looped around each ankle, so it had constant tension. She'd squat, then do an abduction (or is it an adduction? I always get them mixed up!)--an outer thigh in Cathe speak. Squat & abduct the other leg. And so on. Probably about 20-25 times. OUCH!

Alternating w/something similar to firewalkers exept she did a little hop w/each step. I think they did this superset maybe 3-4 times.

It looked like it hurt--the client was in great shape, but she looked like she was working hard.........;)

Hi Laura! We have done the Squat and Abduct (outer thigh-Adduction is inner thigh) in class before but I cannot imagine doing 20-25 at a time! OUCH is right! Can you describe the "hop" exercise in more detail? Are you just hopping nonstop side-to-side alternating legs? I'm always looking for new ways to get a reaction from my students!

It was a hop bringing both feet together, then a step w/feet spread again, hop together, feet apart, same side one way across the room, then she'd switch directions & hop to the other end of the room.

Talk about a spiking HR!

Catherine, I am evil, but after reading what Laura just explained, I'm not sure I am THAT evil! Ha! I DO want my students to come back! :D

I think Red Carpet Ready has these side leaps w/ bands in their circuits. Chalene also does speed skaters w/ the bands in Burn It Off (part of CLX). They are great!

In CLX, there are various moves with bands around the ankles, including jumping jacks (keep the feet somewhat wide, then jump wider) and abductions.

(I always remember 'ab' vs 'ad'-duction this way : with 'adduction, you are 'adding' the legs together, or bringing them together. 'abduction' is like someone being abducted or taken away).

Yes, Laura, I am very familiar with these and do them too. I can incorporate this into future DVD...no problem

As for the word Abduction. I don't always like to say it on DVD because it is hard to hear the difference. In the fitness industry many of us just say adduction and AB-duction (as in saying the letter A and then saying the letter B followed by the word "duction"). That greatly reduces the confusion.

I must be weird. This sounds like a great exercise. :)
