A question for quilters.

I have always done cross stitch and embroidery but have never actually quilted. I just finished an embroidered lap quilt and decided I aam quilting it myself rather than pay someone to do it. I eventually want to get into patch quilts. I bought my hoop from a quilt store here in town and it's a 16" or 18" I can't remember. I guess since I'm a beginner I'm having trouble doing the 3 stitches and then pull the thread through. I can do it but my stiches are too long and far apart. So I'm doing each stich individually. It's OK but it's awkward since I have the hoop on my lap and my right hand is always going from front to back. So, I was wondering if anyone here uses a floor stand (with a round hoop). Where can I get one that's not super expensive but still good quality and can I actually sit back in my chair while using it? Not sure how many of you do this but I thought I'd still ask.

Hi Kim! I won't be any help with the floor stand but just wanted to say I was originally a X-stitcher too and then, got into quilting. You will love it..it goes by so much faster the X-stitch although if I still had the time, I'd do BOTH! Have FUN and post us a pic of your finished project. Good Luck finding a floor hoop.

Are you using needles specifically for quilting? They are very small and very sharp. Using them will help you make several stitches at a time. I've tried to quilt with 'regular' needles and it just doesn't work.

As for a floor stand quilting hoop, you might want to try Wal Mart. They have a sewing department and they normally stock some quilting supplies. I got my card table sized one from them for $20 (it's more than $50 in the quilting stores!). I don't know if they have the round ones that come over your lap but it's worth a look if you do have a Wal Mart nearby.

Hand quilting does take some time to get a feel for. Keep at it and it will get easier, I promise.

I'm using a 9 quilting needle. The lady at the quilt store said that beginners start with either an 8 or 9. If I try to make the stitches small and close together I can't get the needle to go through all three layers. Alot of the quilting is curvy instead of straight lines so maybe that's why it's harder to do the running stitch. I'm going to check WalMart and see what they have as far as the hoop stands.

What are you filled with batting or flannel?
Are you staying off the seam far enough as to only get 3 layers?
