80s fashions are back!

The discussion about low-rise pants in the 'tummy/body parts' thread made me remember that I wanted to post this: I was watching one of the morning news shows on Friday, and they did a segment on the return of 80s fashion. ICK!!! !!! x(

Among the really awful styles that are apparently now "back": really big sweaters over leggings (making your body look like an ice cream cone). Really skinny legged jeans and a big sweater on top (more of the ice cream cone). Cat suits...shudder...except with a short jacket on top so that your leotard-covered butt is out for all the world to see.

Not a low-rise in sight!! Ugh. Who decides what's in style, anyhow?! I really hated the styles in the 80s.

Oh, and speaking of style, on Friday afternoon I saw the What Not to Wear guy sitting at an outdoor cafe, having lunch. I should have stopped and bugged him for his autograph or something--maybe I could have gotten a makeover, with the really horrible t-shirt, jeans and clogs that I was wearing that day!

Not the dreaded big sweater over leggings deal! Yup, I actually had a few getups like that, but a long shirt instead of a bid sweater. I used to wear these dark green leggings... and my Dad saw me in them and told me I looked like an elf. (Thinking back now, I'm sure I probably did.) I could see getting a pair for hanging around the house... but not to go out in. And I could never go back to high-waisted jeans, especially the kind that taper down at the ankle. I don't think they look good on anybody (my SIL never stopped wearing them!!!)

<You saw Clinton Kelly? Cool. What cafe was he at? Just curious.>

It was in Union Square, on the Broadway side of the flea market. Might have been the Union Square Cafe, even--right around that block. It was on the side street--I want to say 16th Street. I actually walked right past him, then stopped and did a doubletake. But I didn't notice the name of the restaurant. They had him very prominently placed--right in the first table that was closest to Broadway, but he had his back to Broadway.

It was almost as good as the time I almost poked Richard Nixon's eye out with my umbrella when he was walking into the CNN building years and years ago!

The thing that pisses me off the most about the big sweater look is that I have worked so hard on my body these past couple of years, and the last thing I want to do is hide it under poofy clothes. I did that for too many years to ever want to do it again.

Agreed on Clinton Kelly. :) As for big hair, I was never able to do that--my hair just won't cooperate.

Bunbun,
Sounds like it may have been the Blue Water Grill. I think they have outdoor seating.

I LOVE that you almost poked Nixon's eye out!! LOL!!

Probably was the Blue Water Grill. I can check this week when I go to the flea market.

For the Nixon story: The friend that I was with that day never did believe that it was Nixon. She didn't see him--she was too busy talking to me and not looking where she was walking (which is how I nearly ran into Nxion with my umbrella in the first place)!

Who cares what the style is? I've never followed it anyhow - why start now? I am the most out of style person around, but I'm comfortable and I like my clothes. You won't catch me in leggings!!! Ugh.

I agree that leggings are terrible- and I can understand the desire to wear something big on top to cover yourself!!

Can you remember the guy on WNTW before Clinton??? TERRIBLE. :p I'm so glad they realized that and put Stacy with a complementary teammate rather than that rugby-jersy-wearing-super-long-icky-haired guy...

Heehee...chiming in! 80s fashions - ick! But speaking of WNTW, I get my hair cut at Arrojo Studio in NYC and saw Nick there (the hairstylist from the show) - just as nice in person :)

Shannon, there is one very important reason to care: the stores only sell what's in fashion. If you need clothes, and you don't want what's in fashion, shopping can be a nightmare. :(

You guys! OMG!!!! I live in a very small town in Kansas, and can't believe you are talking about Nick Arrojo and Clinton Kelly like you see them all the time! That is incredibly cool!!!!! I am a huge WNTW fan and my dream is to have Nick Arrojo work his magic on my hair! It would almost be worth the embarrassment by being on the show! BTW, how much is a haircut at Nick Arrojo's Studio? A haircut around here is about 12-15 dollars.

Big hair, tapered jeans....when did THEY go out of style? Hold on, the seam on my stirrup pants is digging into my foot. }(

sst-
Nick charges $400 for a haircut, but there are many other stylists, and they all charge less than Nick.

Oh, and at Arrojo Studio, Nick does NOT do the hair washing like you see on WNTW. LOL.
